Let us make the Shifthappen/Gender equality and status of women in India & World. - Presentation Transcript

  1. The Shift YET to happen..
    G
    E
  2. Gender equality and Status of women in India and world wide
  3. What is “GE”
Gender equality, as related to human rights is a fundamental right. Gender Equity is one of the goals of the United Nations Millennium project to end world poverty by 2015.
  4. True, that over the years women have made great strides in many areas with notable progress in reducing some gender gaps…
  5. But….
The majority of women earn on average about three-fourths of the pay of males for the same work, outside of the agricultural sector, in both developed and developing countries.
  6. Though 67% of the hours of work done in the world is by women, they earn only 10% of the world’s income..
  7. And
In most countries, women work approximately twice the unpaid time men do.
  8. The value of unremunerated work was estimated at about $16 billion, from which $11 billion represents the invisible contribution of women.
  9. Two-thirds of the 130 million children worldwide who are not in school are girls.
  10. 3 out of 5 women in Southern Asia and an estimated 50% of all women in Africa and in the Arab region are still illiterate.
  11. An appalling fact
    Female infanticide.
The number of girls born and surviving in India is significantly less compared with the number of boys.
  12. Reason
Female fetuses are being aborted and baby girls deliberately neglected and left to die.
Gender inequality starts right from the womb!!
  13. Over the years, the United NationOrganization has helped create an historic legacy of internationally agreed strategies, standards, programmes and goals to advance the status of women worldwide.
  14. Still
The vicious circle of illiteracy and social backwardness keep the fair sex under dark and make them vulnerable perpetually, pushing them at the lower rungs of the ladder.
  15. Domestic violence
Close to 50% of women experience some degree of domestic violence during marriage.
  16. Rape is used as a weapon against women
  17. Around 60 to 70 per cent of cases of rape go unreported. Of the few reported cases, convictions are rare.
  18. Reason
Social stigma, and the embarrassment faced by the victim in testifying the case in open court.
  19. How/ what can be done to change the scene??
  20. We shall depend on the Government and police and authorities only up to some extent.
  21. For the law breakers always getaway through the legal loopholes.
  22. And if we want to make the SHIFT
    happen…
  23. Men and women should understand the significance of each other, and learn how to live in co-operation and harmony.
  24. We are the Society and to make it better and bring in a change we must change. Together we shall change things…..
  25. “Can man be freeif woman be a slave?”
    -poet PB.Shelley
    No…Never..
  26. We shall start the tilt from our home, where the division of family responsibilities is still very unequal between women and men.
  27. Once equality is taught in more homes, the media, the job market, and public opinion will follow.
  28. And amend the way the girls are brought up…
Let the girl children be taught self defense along with academic curriculum.
    .
  29. .
Gender based negative comments discouraging the activities of a girl child
  30. Every woman must be taught/ encouraged to be economically independent.
  31. Women must voice their opinions regarding their needs/ grievances/ atrocities et al against them...
  32. Then sure..
The Shift may indeed happen.. Let us make it happen and make this world a better place for the women of future.
  33. Thanks for viewing this show. Your comments are appreciated. Do vote up if you feel it is worth enough.
