  • 2. Hanukkah is the Jewishfestival of lights.It is celebrated inNovember or Decemberfor 8 days.
  • 3. Who celebrates Hanukkah?People called Jews, celebrateHanukkah.They believe that God createdeverything.They read stories from the oldTestament in a special book calledthe Torah.
  • 4. This Jewish family are celebrating Hanukkah in December by lighting the menorah. Theyremember when the Jews rebuilt their temple 2000 years ago.
  • 5. Each night of Hanukkah a candle is added to themenorah until all eight candles are alight on thelast day.It reminds Jewish people of the miracle of the lamp.....
  • 6. What was the miracle of the lamp?When the Syrians destroyed the Jewish temple, 2000 years ago in Jerusalem, the Jewish people were sad.
  • 7. The Jews defeated the Syrians andrebuilt their temple. They dedicated itto God.
  • 8. They wanted to light a lamp in the templebut there was only enough oil to keep itburning for 1 night. It kept burning for 8 nights! What a miracle!
  • 9. This menorah stands just outside theWhite House in Washington, USA.
  • 10. During Hanukkah Jewish children aregiven chocolate coins called gelt.
  • 11. During Hanukkah Jewish people eat Latkes.They are potato cakes made fromgrated potato , eggs, onion and flour.
  • 12. Jewish children play with dreidel.They are four–sided spinning tops.
