2. -Children learn best when making
connections to their former experiences:
-i.e making connections to the concepts
and the languages they have already
learned and making connections to the
cultural backgrounds they have experienced.
All children are to learn who they are in our
ISS community and in our global world.
It’s not only about language.
3. The Lower School at ISS strives to give all children the
opportunity to make connections through the
-ISS wants to take the initiative to affirm the students’ linguistic identity.
-ISS wants to encourage the children to speak and write in their mother tongue.
- ISS wants to create an instructional climate where the linguistic and cultural
experience of the whole child is actively accepted and validated.
-ISS wants to support their learning by offering their mother tongue through
which they will learn and deepen their understanding of the Units of Inquiry
-ISS wants to support the students’s mother tongue development especially
also in the Early Years Program because young children are still at the
beginning of their mother tongue acquisition in that stage.
-Through the MT lessons EAL children are able to learn English quicker as
-Teaching the whole child.
We are now teaching Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish
4. Why is it important for EAL children to learn through
their mother tongue?
All our teachers teach the concepts that are important for
the children to learn. Our teaching is interconnected:
●  The MT teachers help the students to understand-
through their mother tongue- the concepts that are
taught in English in the mainstream lessons. The
students will use/learn English when it is made
comprehensible for them. The English language/
concepts are made comprehensible in the EAL classes,
mainstream classes AND in the MT classes .
