  • 1. Why should your children learn their mother tongue at ISS? Parent Meeting Oct.1st 2013 Beatrice Morales-Bocksch EAL teacher, Mother Tongue Coordinator LS
  • 2. -Children learn best when making connections to their former experiences: -i.e making connections to the concepts and the languages they have already learned and making connections to the cultural backgrounds they have experienced. All children are to learn who they are in our ISS community and in our global world. (PYP curriculum). Making Connections! It’s not only about language.
  • 3. The Lower School at ISS strives to give all children the opportunity to make connections through the following goals. -ISS wants to take the initiative to affirm the students’ linguistic identity. -ISS wants to encourage the children to speak and write in their mother tongue. - ISS wants to create an instructional climate where the linguistic and cultural experience of the whole child is actively accepted and validated. -ISS wants to support their learning by offering their mother tongue through which they will learn and deepen their understanding of the Units of Inquiry (UOI.) -ISS wants to support the students’s mother tongue development especially also in the Early Years Program because young children are still at the beginning of their mother tongue acquisition in that stage. -Through the MT lessons EAL children are able to learn English quicker as well. -Teaching the whole child. We are now teaching Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and French.
  • 4. Why is it important for EAL children to learn through their mother tongue? All our teachers teach the concepts that are important for the children to learn. Our teaching is interconnected: ●  The MT teachers help the students to understand- through their mother tongue- the concepts that are taught in English in the mainstream lessons. The students will use/learn English when it is made comprehensible for them. The English language/ concepts are made comprehensible in the EAL classes, mainstream classes AND in the MT classes . Teachers work together to make all concepts comprehensible.
