Peter and the Issue of Suffering <ul><li>Peter rebukes Jesus for teaching about His death, burial and resurrection (Matthew 16) </li></ul><ul><li>Peter denies Christ 3 times on the night of Jesus arrest by the religious leaders </li></ul><ul><li>After Pentecost, we have a new Peter with a new understanding of suffering </li></ul><ul><li>Acts 5:41 “ The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name .” </li></ul>

Suffering in 1 Peter <ul><li>Chapter 1: Suffering is the will of God, which purifies our faith, to the glory of God (v.6-9) </li></ul><ul><li>Chapter 2: Innocent suffering is commended, Jesus is our example (v.20-15) </li></ul><ul><li>Chapter 3: Suffering may open the door to witness to our faith (v.18-22) </li></ul><ul><li>Chapter 4: Suffering should not be a surprise but a reason for rejoicing (v.12-14) </li></ul><ul><li>Chapter 5: Suffering is the experience shared by the whole body of Christ </li></ul>
  4. 4. Spiritual Gifts and 1 Peter <ul><li>1 Peter 4:7-9 “ The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling .” </li></ul><ul><li>Spiritual gifts can not be fruitful if they are not used in love </li></ul>

Spiritual Gifts and 1 Peter <ul><li>Peter assumes some things about spiritual gifts </li></ul><ul><li>First- Everyone has a gift </li></ul><ul><li>Second- You should know what your gift is </li></ul><ul><li>Third- Peter, like Paul, is assuming you are already using your gift </li></ul><ul><li>You are a steward of the gifts given to you </li></ul><ul><li>As a steward you need to use your gift </li></ul>

How Should Spiritual Gifts Be Used? <ul><li>1 Peter 4:11 “ Whoever speaks, let him speak, as it were, the utterances of God; whoever serves, let him do so as by the strength which God supplies ” </li></ul><ul><li>Speakers need to speak the Word of God </li></ul><ul><li>Servers need to serve in the power of God </li></ul><ul><li>The end result is the glory of God </li></ul>

Spiritual Gifts and Suffering <ul><li>The relationship between suffering and spiritual gifts requires the grace of God </li></ul><ul><li>The are 2 kinds of suffering: Suffering for doing wrong and suffering for what is right </li></ul><ul><li>Suffering prepares us for ministry </li></ul><ul><li>1 Peter 3:15 “ But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you .” </li></ul>

Learning From Others <ul><li>Job is based upon the lie Satan- people only worship God is because He bribes them </li></ul><ul><li>The sovereignty of God sustained Job </li></ul><ul><li>His friends believed the lie- and afterward Job interceded for THEIR restoration </li></ul><ul><li>Asaph thought he was ripped off by God because others had it better than he did </li></ul><ul><li>He concluded whatever draws me to God is ultimately good and whatever draws me away from Him is ultimately evil </li></ul>
  9. 9. Amazing Grace <ul><li>Amazing grace! How sweet the sound </li></ul><ul><li>That saved a wretch like me! </li></ul><ul><li>I once was lost but now am found </li></ul><ul><li>Was blind but now I see </li></ul>
  10. 10. <ul><li>‘ Twas grace that taught my heart to fear </li></ul><ul><li>And grace my fears relieved </li></ul><ul><li>How precious did that grace appear </li></ul><ul><li>The hour I first appeared </li></ul><ul><li>The Lord has promised good to me </li></ul><ul><li>His word my hope secures </li></ul><ul><li>He will my shield and portion be </li></ul><ul><li>As long as life endures </li></ul>
  11. 11. <ul><li>Through many dangers, toils, and snares </li></ul><ul><li>I have already come </li></ul><ul><li>‘ Tis grace hath brought me save thus far </li></ul><ul><li>And grace will lead me home </li></ul><ul><li>When we’ve been there ten thousand years </li></ul><ul><li>Bright shining as the sun </li></ul><ul><li>We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise </li></ul><ul><li>Than when we’d first begun </li></ul>
