Task for Students: Research Report on Australia’s participation in the First World War.
Part A: Research the topic: make sure that you use a range of materials, using primary and
secondary sources.
Part B: Plan your report: what key questions will you be addressing?
Part B: Write the Report.
Part C: Write a bibliography
Outcomes we want to see if students are using the internet for research:
· We want them to have access to reliable information.
· We want them to posess the skills to be able to identify and locate these reliable
and appropriate resources.
· We want them to use a range of sources: visual, written, multiple perspectives.
· We want them to Read, think about and understand the sources that they use.

2. Analogue Task for Students: Researching for the report:
Create a list of resources that you will use.

A. What are some key resources that are available?
Go to the Diigo group that I have set up and look at least one of the sites that I have chosen in the library.
Using the comment function under the title of the bookmarks/sites that you look at, make a comment as to
why or why not it is likely whether you will use this source.
B. Some key facts that need to be established.
Using the sites that are in the library on the diigo list only find the following information
by using the highlight and sticky note function to answer this question:

3. Why do some historians and other commentators believe that the ANZACS landed at the
wrong point on April 25, 1915?
C. You find and share the resources!
· Please add to the Diigo group’s library three sites that you think will be
useful for your research. Add a description when you click the bookmark
button and add your tags! Consider:
· Who produced the site? (groups or key authors)
· How would you describe the point of view? Government / historical /
geographical/ personal.
· When was it last updated?
· If you used this site what other sort of site might you have to consult to
ensure you got a range of resources?

4. D. Locating and annotating visual resources.
· Add to the diigo library one photograph, painting, drawing, illustration,
photograph of an artefact.Images that you locate cannot be from Google
Image search - you need to go into the website where the picture is located.
Use the highlight and bookmark function (right click on the image that you
wish to highlight) when you find an image that you wish to use.

5. · In the description dialog box, include an explanation of the following
three things:
• Main ideas presented in the image (literal and symbolic)
• Main values presented in the image.
• Function / purpose of the image.
For Teachers: Use sticky notes on an image to get students thinking about resources
One other feature of Diigo is the Sticky Notes function. It is different to the "Comment"
function on diigo because it allows you to comment on the actual page of the internet, as
opposed throught the diigo website.

6. Using sticky notes might be helpful for history teachers because:
• It allows the teacher to direct students to specific pages and ask questions where
students can respond.
• Teachers can see who has responded to the image.
• comments are open for the group to see.
