December 6, 2012Page 2 LightSpeed II - Users Guide The Standard Users Manual for the LightSpeed II Marine WiFi Hotspot Sharing System On behalf of Alan Spicer - Alan Spicer Marine Telecom and, and Bryan Fugett of International Marine Electronics we would like to thank you for your purchase of the LightSpeed II Marine WiFi Hotspot Sharing System. This manual and the product is Copyright 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 by ASMT and IME. The system is a "World Wide" capable WiFi 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Radio/Router (Hotspot Sharing System) - It can go on Every WiFi Channel anywhere in the World. That includes channels not available in the U.S. (You can change the "Country Code" under "Wireless" settings for use in practically any country that has WiFi. Most other systems cant do that. Most other systems cant do all of B, G, and the newer "N" WiFi. You should receive the following items in your package: 1.) The Integrated Antenna and Router Unit. (Currently shipped product has 2.5 - 30" antenna. The gain and antenna characteristics are exactly the same for 2 foot, 4 foot, and 8 foot antennas. The other sizes are available at additional cost if necessary. The smaller size, however, avoids most installation obstructions on marine vessels.) 2.) The Antenna and Router Unit Mounting Bracket. This is a Standard 1in-14 thread.(male) "Flange" style mount. 3.) A 110vAC to DC Power Injector Unit with 110vAC power cord. 4.) 50 Feet of CAT 5 Ethernet and Power over Ethernet Cable. * Please check that you have all of these items in your package.
  3. 3. December 6, 2012Page 3 ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION The assembly is designed to be minimal and the Antenna and Router Unit are sealed and you should not attempt to take apart this unit. Taking apart this unit will void your warranty. Should you require service please contact us for help. 1.) Install your antenna as high as possible - keeping in mind that it is possible for your antenna to be Too High for low Hotspot WiFi Internet Systems. Because of the high gain (10dBi) the vertical antenna beam will be pulled in from the upward and downward looking areas. You will also want to be as clear as possible from satellite radomes and other antennas. Antenna installations are often a trade off or best effort with what is possible. If you are not sure consult a professional marine electronics installer or call us by telephone for advice. 2.) The CAT5 Ethernet and PoE Cable should be already passed through the mounting bracket and you will need to make provisions for passing this small cable down from the installation location to your below decks location where you will place the 110vAC to DC Power Injector Unit. This is also where the RJ45 / CAT5 connections will be for both the Onboard Network (or Computer) Connection and this long run to the Antenna and Router Unit. Be very careful during installation NOT TO twist the 50 foot cable near the antenna or elsewhere. If this cable is damaged it can cause the unit to become inoperable and require a service call to repair it. Notice "PoE" and "LAN" cable jacks on the left of this unit and the 110vAC power cable outlet on the right of this unit. PoE - must go to the 50 foot cable running to the Antenna and Router Unit "LAN" must go to a computer or Network Switch Hub (10/50 Fast Ethernet) which is often included in Wireless Access Point/Routers as a 3 or 4 port LAN switch hub. 3.) Once the antenna is installed and the 50 foot CAT5 cable is routed then you can apply power to the PoE Injector.
  4. 4. December 6, 2012Page 4 4.) Connect the 50 foot topside running CAT5 cable to the "PoE" jack on the Power Injector Unit. The Antenna and Router Unit will now be powered up and will boot up in just a few minutes. 5.) Connect your own CAT5 cable from the "LAN" port of the PoE Unit directly to a computer for initial checkout. This will allow you to determine that it is working correctly before integrating it with a larger onboard network infrastructure. This system does DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - in our default configuration. The system is designed to "Factory Default" to known settings that we have programmed after careful consideration, with experience with Public Hotspots, and is meant to avoid IP Address Conflicts between the boat onboard network and Public Hotspot Router Systems. It is highly recommended to use the default settings. Any other networking gear onboard should be IP renumbered to follow the same numbering that we are using. This will allow everything to work together without problems. OUR DEFAULT IP ADDRESS IS: for the LightSpeed II System. Other equipment on the same physical (wired and wireless) Local Area Network should follow the addressing scheme: /24 - Network Address. Hosts (Computers, Printers, etc.) should be assigned from the range: to Anything outside that range would not be able to reach the LightSpeed II Unit or Internet provided by it. dhcp netmask= dhcp start= dhcp end= We start DHCP IP Address Assignment at and we end at .199. You should avoid this range when manually (Static IP) assigning IP Addresses on the Local Area Network. You should also not use for anything as that is the LightSpeed II Units IP Address. 6.) Once the connection is made to your test computer ... it should get an IP Address automatically as well as network mask and Gateway You may also notice that it gets DNS Server also of You can now open your favorite web browser and access the Graphical User Interface (GUI) web page: You will be required to LOG IN... Username: imea Password: imea To help remember this it is an acronym for International Marine Electronics and Alan Spicer Marine Telecom. IME + A. This gives us IMEA.
  5. 5. December 6, 2012Page 5 **** DO NOT ENTER THE TAB with the "0" RED "Do Not Enter" symbol. If you change settings in that section you may incur a Service Call or Support charge from us to correct going into an incorrect MODE of OPERATION on the unit. **** Also DO NOT OPEN Tools > Airview. Airview is a Spectrum Analyzer function of the system - but it doesnt work across Onboard Networks such as Routers typically found on a Yacht. This can cause the system to hang up and become unavailable. It is supposed to recover in about 2 minutes - but most routers do not seem to find the system again. Rebooting routers connected after the Lightspeed II System might recover this, or you might have to call us by phone for a Reset Button fix for this problem. 7.) You should then be presented with a main page looking something like this: LightSpeed II - Main Page after logging in with "imea", "imea" username and password 8.) Click on the “Wireless” tab at the top, followed by the “Select…” button to Scan for a WiFi Hotspot System. Out of the list select a hotspot without Encryption or one with Encryption where you
  6. 6. December 6, 2012Page 6 already have the code or password (typically given to you by a marina.) Click to set the dot to the left of that network. Click the “Select” button. LightSpeed II - "Select" Dialog Box Once you check a radio button for a Hotspot and click the SELECT button at the bottom of this dialog box - you are dropped back at the "Wireless" page. If you chose an Encrypted network enter the WEP, WPA, or WPA2 once you are back on the main “Wireless” page. Then SAVE the settings at the bottom of the page, and APPLY CHANGES at the top of the page. (Note: both SAVE and APPLY must be done.)
  7. 7. December 6, 2012Page 7 This screen shot shows the "Change" and "Apply" one-two punch that you need to do. You can then go back the “Main” page by clicking the MAIN tab at the top. You will notice the Signal Strength in colored bar graph at the top right under the AP MAC. You can also VERIFY YOUR CONNECTION by clicking on: Monitor - DHCP Client. In there you should have obtained "Automatic" DHCP settings from the Hot Spot WiFi System. See below about NO GOOD of (This is the 3rd of several clickable text links [like in web pages] just above the LAN and WLAN Monitor graphs near the bottom of the page.) If you get a WLAN IP Address with 169.254 then something is wrong either with your Wireless Security Code (if any?) or the Hotspot System that you have chosen is not supplying Internet / Network Access. * OUR: WLAN dhcp fallback= - that means NO GOOD. OTHERWISE... YOU SHOULD NOW HAVE INTERNET ACCESS – ASSUMING THE HOTSPOT THAT YOU CHOSE IS ACTUALLY PROVIDING INTERNET ACCESS. YOU MAY HAVE ANOTHER SIGN-ON WEB PAGE FOR SOME PAY HOTSPOT SYSTEMS. * Generally if the link is NOT working the signal bar graph will keep going away ... and the words "Not Associate" or similar will keep showing in its place. This is because the Hotspot system and
  8. 8. December 6, 2012Page 8 Lightspeed II will keep disconnecting and retrying the connection. Again this usually means a WEP, WPA, WPA code is wrong, or the Hotspot is not a public one and not giving IP Addresses for Internet Access. (It is also possible to connect to a system and get IP settings, but that system has no Internet Access behind it.) LightSpeed II - Wireless Page (Wireless tab) - from here you click the "Select" button and a WiFi Scan is performed. You select the wireless network with the lowest negative number because thats the strongest signal. Please follow the instructions above. There are many more advanced features of this system. Most of them in the daily operation on marine platforms would never need to be used or changed ... and should not be unless you know what the affects may be.   9. 9. December 6, 2012Page 9 LightSpeed II is an 802.11 b/g/ and n capable WiFi device in the Unlicensed Part 15 2.4 Ghz radio spectrum. It is an excellent combination of a powerful Radio/Router Unit and the *BEST* Digital Antenna brand Marine WiFi Antenna. Because of being unlicensed radio spectrum there is no guarantee against interference that could cause the performance to degrade. Range Performance specification of over 50 km is from the Radio/Router manufacturer and is a theoretical maximum for that hardware alone ... independent of the antenna part of the system. For WiFi systems you have to take into account both YOUR WiFi system and the "other guy" meaning the Hotspot System you are trying to use. His antenna may be on the floor or it may be 20 or 30 feet up. His antenna may be "all around" 360 degrees or it may be a "directional" panel antenna only facing certain Coverage Zones such as certain docks in a Marina. If the signal is lower than "-80 dBm" you are going to have trouble connecting and/or using that service. Try a stronger (lower negative number) system or wait till you can re-locate to a better location with a stronger signal. WiFi is Line-of-Sight. Chances are if you cannot SEE the antenna (your antenna cannot see it) then it cannot work with it. Geographical features, buildings, etc. may obstruct the path. These things are beyond our control and your control. Just know that you have one of the BEST Marine WiFi Systems you can buy - and if you cannot connect to a WiFi Hotspot .... chances are no one else at your location can either. The WiFi Radio receiver specs are excellent and the transmitter power is 28 dBm max with zero loss in coax cable (old style systems) and the antenna gain ... You cant go any higher than this according to the FCC.

Longer antennas are just cosmetic length additions.. WiFi, 2.4 Ghz, is only 1.23 inches at 1/4 wavelength. 4 x that at 1 Full Wavelength.
