  3. 3. Contemporary Literature Year Four Poems Woodpecker Suggested Activities Week 1  About the poem.  Pupils explore the characteristics of a woodpecker. Teacher can provide guidelines such as its appearance, habitat or habit.  Pupils pair up and read poem to each other. Get the pupils to read the poem using different voice. Example: their own mother or father, a really mean or strict person, a cheerful voice, an opera singer’s voice. Week 2  Discuss the poem. o Why woodpecker pecks? o Name other animals that behave strangely. o In the poem, the author sees the woodpecker as a guest knocking on the door.
