  • A year ago we invited academic staff and VPs for teaching and Learning to a library workshop to update them on the implications of restructuring

  • We suspected there was a lack of awareness amongst academicsof library supports available.
    This lack of awareness was confirmed.
    We tabled the idea of a browseable toolkit at the workshop showcasing library solutions to common student IL problems presenting staff academic staff
    We presented academic staff with a mock up of a toolkit to see if academic staff would like the idea
    The concept of the toolkit was well received.
    We felt a toolkit would help us disseminate our elearning work further via academic communication with students
  • The toolkit evolved to what we now call the Learning support menu
    I was given the lead on the project . Joshua Clark is the Web Editor
    And we began work on creating an online framework the learning support menu using our CMS system.
    We developed the concepts and Josh Clarke our web editor built our vision online.
    At the time we were under time constraint as our web editor was going on leave during the summer
    So we focused on building an online space and creating content to place in the Learning Support Menu

  • I’m going to side track for a minute and talk about the inspiration
    I drew from a designer called Thomas Heatherwick
    Heatherwick along with a team created a seed cathedral exhibit for the World Expo in Shanghai in 2010
    Each nation has a themed pavillion at the expo
    The seed pavillion represents UK
    The Seed pavillion
    Represents the nations technology culture and achievements
    significant to human nutrition ecology of the planet and medicine
    It is 15 m high box made of acrylic rod each displaying a seed

  • The pavillion had 60 000 acrycilic rods showcasing 250,000 seeds cast in each tip
    The seeds are from Kew Gardens’ Millennium Seedbank whose mission is to collect the seeds of 25% of the world’s plant species by 2020.
    The pavillion exhibit won the Gold medal for best pavilion
    Our learning support menu needed to be a gold standard for showcasing our achievements
    This was inspiration for the Learning Support Menu how can we adapt this thinking to showcase our Elearning object collection and to create awareness amongst academics and reflect our achievements in this area and our new shift in thinking on T& L
