  2. 2. What is a PSA? A pressure-sensitive adhesive is a material that bonds two surfaces together solely by surface contact, achieved by slight initial external pressure.   4. 4. RUBBER BASED PSAs • Natural and/or synthetic rubber or latex are formulated with tackifiers, antioxidants and other additives. Characterized by good initial tack and adhesion particularly to low-surface- energy materials.   5. 5. ACRYLIC PSAs Based on acrylic polymers, they offer resistance to solvents, UV light, elevated temperatures, plasticizers and chemical reagents. They have low to moderate initial tack and adhesion, but these characteristics can be modified by formulation with tackifiers and additives.   6. 6. HOT-MELT No solvent , applied at high temperature Formulated with synthetic thermoplastic rubbers + tackifiers + oil + antioxidants + additives. Special products: UV Acrylics, coated as traditional HM, then cured by UV light. The degree of curing admits to modify the behaviour of the adhesive (high curing level = higher cohesion; low curing level = higher adhesion and tack, lower cohesion).   8. 8. PSA for PROTECTIVE FILMS Characteristic: a very high cohesion, quite low peel, good wettability on the surface to be protected, clean removability, no ghosting effect. Also water-light-solvent resistance can be necessary. These properties need the PSA to be cured. ICHEMCO offers both water and solvent based products. PRODUCTS for MASKING TAPES Ichemco offers a complete range of products for masking tapes: • Latices for paper saturation • Primer to improve the anchorage of the adhesive (Primer MT2) • Water based release agents (serie Release W45 GB), to be used in combination with HM and solvent based NR adhesives. ICHEMCO offers standard relase agents, to be used in combination with solvent based NR and HM PSAs and water repellent products. These ones combine release properties with a very good water repellency and are suggested for ourdoor applications. Adding a curing agent • In water-based systems, with polyaziridines, check pH and adjust to 9 • Add under stirring, the system has to be homogeneous and with no lumps. • Take care to pot-life. ANTIOXIDANTS • Used to stabilize PSAs from thermo-oxidative degradation and photodegradation. • Degradation alters the behaviour of the product: discoloration-viscosity changes-loss of adhesion-etc Autooxidation is initiated by heat, light (high energy radiation), mechanical stress, catalyst residues or reaction with impurities. In this process, free radicals are formed, react with oxygen to form peroxy radicals which further react with organic material leading to hydroperoxides. Antioxidants interrupt the degradation process and can be classified as -PRIMARY ANTIOXIDANTS they reacts with peroxy radicals (mainly they are sterically hindered phenols) -SECONDARY ANTIOXIDANTS they react with hydroperoxides (mainly phospites and thioesters) Photodegradationis caused by exposure to UV light, from natural and/or artificial sources.
