  3. 3. A brief history of the celloThe cello was first invented in thefifteenth century but the cello firstappeared in many painting in latetwelfth and thirteenth centuries. Thefirst known maker of the cello wasAndrea Amati, he was the teacher forthe world famous Italian stringinstrument builder Antonio Stradivari.
  4. 4. Development of the celloAmati’s original cello was larger thanthe cello we have today. In 1690 thesize was reduced from 31 inches or 78cm to 29 inches or 73 cm. And eversince then instrument builder havebeen trimming the size of the cello tomake it smaller and smaller.
  5. 5. The playing position of the cello In modern orchestras cellists supports most ofthe weight of the cello with an endpin thatextends out from the bottom of the cello. Theleft hand is responsible for fingeringthe notes while the right handplucks or bows the strings.
