Plate Tectonics Pk

 1. 1. Plate Tectonics Evolution of the Earth
 2. 2. Volcanoes

Volcanoes are the result of hot spots within the crust or mantle of the earth.

The hot, liquid rock will break through weak spots in the surface and form volcanoes or flood basalts.

 3. 3.

Some eruptions are quiet with very fluid (low viscosity) lava flows

… while others are explosive
 4. 4.

Many volcanoes do not release lava, instead they spit ash and small bits of lava called lapilli.

 5. 5. Volcanoes Mt. St. Helen before the explosive eruption
 6. 6. Volcanoes Time lapse of the eruption
 7. 7. Volcanoes Mt. St. Helen after the eruption
 8. 8. Volcano locations
 9. 9. Earthquakes

Earthquakes are a result of motion within the earth.

This only occurs where the earth is solid and therefore can only occur within about 100 miles of the surface

 10. 10. Earthquakes
 11. 11. Earthquakes
 12. 12. Earthquakes Earthquakes can cause Tsunamis
 13. 13. Earthquakes Location of worldwide earthquakes
 14. 14. Tectonic Plates
 15. 15. Tectonic Plates Volcanoes
 16. 16. Tectonic Plates
 17. 17. Plate Boundaries

Convergent – plates move toward one another

Divergent – plates move away from each other

Transform – plate moves sideways from each other

 18. 18. Convergent Plates
 19. 19. Divergent Plates
 20. 20. Transform Plates
 21. 21. Mid-Plate Hotspots
 22. 22. Why do the Plates Move?

No single idea explains everything but we can identify several forces that contribute to the movement of the plates.

 23. 23. The Big Picture
 24. 24. Pangaea The break up of Pangaea
 25. 25. Where are we going? We appear to be headed for another super continent as North America, South America, Asia and Australia converge in the ever shrinking Pacific Ocean
