According to Wikipedia, HIV is a virus that causes AIDS

It is a condition in humans in which the immune system begins to fail, weakening the person's ability to fight infections and cancer.

Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk.

The majority of HIV infections are acquired through unprotected sex, but can also be spread through sharing needles.

There is currently no vaccine or cure for HIV or AIDS, so its seriousness should not be taken lightly.

It is estimated that HIV infects about .6% of the world’s population.

From 1981 to 2006, AIDS killed more than 25 million people.

The estimated number of new cases of HIV is 42,000 each year.

HIV.com reports that in the United States, it is believed that over 900,000 Americans may be infected with HIV

and that over 600,000 reported cases of AIDS have been recorded since 1981.

These numbers don’t include the people who have not yet been diagnosed.

According to kcmo.org, there are currently 4,900 males and 790 females living with HIV and around 160 people living with AIDs in Kansas City.

Sadly, these numbers are continuing to grow.

Gay men are more affected by HIV and AIDS than any other group of people.

In the USA, it is estimated that nearly 220,000 men who have sex with men were living with HIV/AIDS in 2006.

and nearly 5,000 had died.

The number of new infections is going up about 1.5% a year.

Even more dramatically,

The number of young homosexual men being newly diagnosed with HIV is rising by 12 percent a year.

18-24 Year old gay men living in Kansas City...

...will be my Target Audience

Despite the continuing impact of HIV & AIDS, awareness is decreasing among these young gay men.

This is because guys like these two underestimate how likely they are to be exposed to sexually transmitted diseases including HIV.

Like most human beings, gays have the tendency to feel invincible and convince themselves that bad things won't happen to them.

The truth is, all of these guys are at risk of being lied to, taken advantage of and exposed to the HIV virus.

Unfortunately, the internet, drugs, alcohol, and hormones can influence gays to partake in unprotected anal sex without considering the risk of HIV.

You are probably wondering why past efforts to fix this problem have failed?

Plenty of information is readily available online and at clinics and hospitals for the gay population to access any time they choose to, but that isn't the problem.

Despite the thousands of fliers, pamphlets, posters, billboards, etc. containing knowledge about...

HIV, AIDS, prevention, transmission, symptoms and testing information,

many of these tools go unused and unnoticed because they are outdated as far as means of effective communication is concerned.

I believe that in order to successfully infect knowledge, it needs to be given when people aren’t looking for it.

I think I can make an impact on the gay community in Kansas City by visually attacking the issues of HIV education, awareness and prevention with new materials.

I want to use innovative design, information, and technology to wake up my peers and make them realize they aren’t invincible to the threats of HIV.

My ideas include innovative methods of delivering important knowledge and information, such as through typographic installations/projections.

I want to send realistic messages in settings and situations in which young gay men usually find it more difficult to maintain safer sexual behavior.

This can involve developing materials (such as condom packages) and information especially for distribution in gay clubs, bars and gay pride events.

Or maybe an eye opening and educational website

that sends a message similar to this one.

I would also like to work with local HIV awareness organizations and activists who can help me distribute and carry out my ideas.
