2Pet 1:1, "Through the righteousness of God."God promised this faith through Habakkuk(2:4). He was righteous and kept his promise. All the elect does not receive this. This isthe faith in the blood of Christ.2nd Pet 2:1-4, Peter writes to a people thathad a pure mind and needs to stir it up. Weget the pure mind of faith through the HolyGhost, which gave them this mind, purifyingtheir hearts through faith in Christ.2nd Peter 3rd Chaper:Verses 2-6: These people have forgottenwhat was spoken to them by the apostles andprophets. If God seems to be slow infulfilling his word, they, and we, begin todoubt, scoff, looking at the way it is and hasbeen that way a long time. We becomewillingly ignorant of the past things that havehappened that God brought about. Nobodybelieved Noah as he preached about the sinsof the people of God and the flood came aspromised and the world of created fleshperished and the earth was not destroyed butwas changed.
Verse 7: "But the heavens and the earthwh ich are new, by the same word are kept instore, reserved unto fire against the Day ofJudgment and perdition of ungodly men." Aswe have now the promise of God that a day ofjudgment is approaching, it is Gods mercifulway to always warn and teach h is peoplesending out men to labor. Many of thoseservants of God became martyrs. Before thecaptivity in Babylon, many years passedthrough to the prophecies of Isaiah andJeremiah as they pleaded with Gods peopleand were persecuted for preaching. Thelongsuffering of God becomes apparent as thepassing of time before the judgment came.Mathew 23:37-38 reads, "Oh Jerusalem,Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, andstonest them that are sent unto thee, howoften would I have gathered thy childrentogether, even as a hen gathereth herchickens under her wings, and ye wOLild not!Behold, YOLir house is left unto you desolate."This explains the one-day or a thousand yearsin Gods sight and his love for his people and i.also recognizing that by our stubborn nature,
he is willing to labor and not willing any should perish. Now some men count this as slackness and take advantage of his longsuffering and count it as salvation. "God though is long suffering toward usward not willing any should perish" - in my words, perish from his gospel kingdom - "but come to repentance." God is not pleased with us in his church with its many factions, long standing grudges, etc. but would desire for us to come to him for protection from Satan, the cause of all these splits. Verse 10: "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night..." Those that doubt his coming in Spirit, he will seem as a thief in the night. His children that watch, listen and obey, they will detect his presence coming near. 2Pet 1:16, "For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty." Now Jesus did not complete a journey to arrive there. He was already there but he appeared in a different formr~-
and with great power and things immediatelychanged. So it is in the 3rd chapter. Now the heavens and earth, what are they according to the bible? Isaiah 1:2, "Hear, 0 heavens, and give ear, 0 earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me." Deut. 32:1, "Give ear, 0 ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, 0 earth, the words of my mouth." Here it is obvious that the heaven and earth is Gods elect disobedient people that he is being longsuffering with and is going to change to a new heaven and earth. The heaven is their attitude and thinking and the earth is their arrogant, self righteous walk in their lives. Much like the Israelites who appeared beautiful on the outside but inside they filled with extortion and excess. Today we hear influential men saying that if you dont believe like I do you cant be a Primitive Baptist. Isaiah 55:7, "Let the J I wicked forsake his way," - this is the
earth - "and the unrighteous man histhoughts:" - this is the heaven part "and let him return unto the Lord, andhe will have mercy upon him; and to ourGod, for he will abundantly pardon."Their repentance would change both theattitude and walk in this life. It wouldbe like Steven told the eunuch at hisbaptism. "If you believe with all yourheart thou mayest" - all the way is whatGod requires. Isaiah 34:5 speaks of Godbathing his sword in heaven. This ispowerful preaching that affects ourvery being with deep remorse andunderstanding. This preaching is thegreat no ise that causes the heavens topass away. Gal. 4:9 now speaks of us asafter we have known God, or rather areknown of God. Why do we turn again tothe weak and beggarly element? If wedo that, we go back unto the bondagefrom which God brought us out bycondemning or writing his lawn in ourheart. This is the burning heat. Col. 2:8gives the same Greek word for element, the meaning of rudiments of this world
and not after Christ. 2nd Pet. 2: 20 proves this and we are just like dogs that return back to that which made them sick to start with.Verse 11-15: "Seeing then that all thesethings shall be dissolved, what manner ofpersons ought we to be in all holyconversation and godliness, Looking for andhasting unto the coming of the day of God,wherein the heavens being on fire shall bedissolved, and the elements shall melt withfervent heat." Now if we look for a lovingbetter day look forward for this to happen. IHasting means we look forward to this as justwhat we need even though it is a great trial, and the unbelievers will be destroyed fromGods kingdom here on earth. Here theheavens are on fire (our attitude) andthinking will change, and elements of worldlywalks and acts will melt away in our lives."Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things,be diligent that ye may be found of him in
peace, without spot, and blameless. Andaccount that the longsuffering of our Lord issalvation;"To the people that dont believe and dontfear or give a different meaning to arr this, hewill come as a thief. If this is eternal, thenthe 14th verse is works for us to makeourselves acceptable at the end of time. Godbe thanked this is not so. So be warned thatwe cant take advantage of Gods slowness. He will not tarry, and this day I feel is on itsway to Gods church.
