    • What is Cyber Crime?  Use of a computer/internet to do something that would be a crime in any case.  Includes anything from downloading illegal music files to stealing millions of dollars from online bank accounts.  Includes non-monetary offenses, such as creating & distributing viruses on other computers or posting confidential business information on the Internet. 3

    • HACKING Hacking in simple terms means illegal intrusion into a computer system without the permission of the computer owner/user. Section 66 of Information Technology Act: 2000 Whoever commits hacking shall be punished with imprisonment up to three years, or with fine which may extend up to two lakh rupees, or with both. 6
    • VIRUS DISSEMINATION Malicious software that attaches itself to other software.. (virus,, worms,, Trojan Horse,, Time bomb,, Logic Bomb,, Rabbit and Bacterium are the malicious software's) Section 66(c) Information Technology Act: 2000 Whoever commits Virus Dissemination shall be punished with imprisonment Up to 2 years and/or with fine up to Rs. 5 lakh. 7

    • CYBER STALKING Defined as the repeated acts harassment or threatening behavior of the cyber criminal towards the victim by using internet services. The Criminal follows the victim by sending emails,, entering the chat rooms frequently.. Section 66 (h) Information Technology Act: 2000 Whoever commits Cyber Stalking shall be punished with imprisonment Up to 2 years and/or with fine up to Rs. 5 lakh 9
    • SOFTWARE PIRACY Theft of software through the illegal copying of genuine programs or the counterfeiting and distribution of products intended to pass for the original.. 10 Section 66 (b) Information Technology Act: 2000 Whoever commits Software Piracy shall be punished with imprisonment Up to 2 years and/or with fine up to Rs. 5 lakh
    • PORNOGRAPHY Internet is being highly used by its abusers to reach and abuse children sexually, worldwide. The internet is very fast becoming a household commodity in India . It is explosion has made the children a viable victim to the cyber crime. Section 67(2) Information Technology Act: 2000 Child pornography - 1st conviction up to 3 years + fine up to Rs. 10 Lakh; 2nd conviction or subsequent conviction up to 7 years + fine up to Rs. 10 Lakh. 11
    • IRC CRIME IRC servers have chat rooms in which people from anywhere the world can come together and chat with each other. 12 Section 66 (g) Information Technology Act: 2000 Whoever commits IRC Crime shall be punished with imprisonment Up to 2 years and/or with fine up to Rs. 5 lakh.
    • CREDIT CARD FRAUD The unauthorized and illegal use of a credit card to purchase anything. Section 66 (h) Information Technology Act: 2000 Whoever commits Credit Card Fraud shall be punished with imprisonment Up to 2 years and/or with fine up to Rs. 5 lakh. 13

    • Spoofing Getting one computer on a network to pretend to have the identity off another computer,, usually one with special access privileges ,, so as to obtain access to the other computers on the network.. Section 66 (d) Information Technology Act: 2000 Whoever commits Spoofing shall be punished with imprisonment up to 3 Yrs + 2 lakh as part of Section 66 Up to 2 years and/or with fine up to Rs. 5 lakh. 22
    • CYBER DEFAMATION The Criminal sends emails containing defamatory matters to all concerned off the victim or post the defamatory matters on a website.. Section 71 (1) Information Technology Act: 2000 Whoever commits Cyber Defamation shall be punished with imprisonment up to 1 Yr. + fine of Rs 1 lakh. 24
    • SALAMI ATTACK In such crime criminal makes insignificant changes in such a manner that such changes would go unnoticed. Section 69 Information Technology Act: 2000 Whoever commits Salami Attack shall be punished with imprisonment up to 7 years. 25
