Today@Rotary Mysore In our first meeting of 2014, Dr. R. Balasubramaniam, founder of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) will talk on “Making Democracy Work”. 2nd January 2014, 6:30 pm, Rotary Center. Dr. R Balasubramaniam (Balu) is a development activist who is a p h y s i c i a n b y qualification. After his MBBS, he earned his MPhil in Hospital Administration & Health Systems Management from BITS, Pilani. He has a Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University. His living habits were greatly influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and at the age of 19, he founded the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (www.svym.org) based on the principles of Ahimsa (nonviolence), Satya (Truth), Seva (Service) and Tyaga (Sacrifice). He has spent the last 29 years of his life in the service of the rural and tribal poor in the forests of India. Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) runs the Vivekananda Memorial Hospitals at Saragur and Kenchanahalli; the Viveka Tribal Center for Learning – a tribal residential school at Hosahalli; the Viveka School of Excellence – a rural school at Saragur; the Vivekananda Teacher Training & Research Center at Hosahalli; the Vivekananda Institute for Leadership Development, the Vivekananda Institute of Indian Studies and the Grassroots Research & Advocacy Movement at Mysore. SVYM also runs more than 50 projects reaching out to nearly half a million people across the state of Karnataka and also has centers in the USA and UK. Dr R Balasubramaniam is the recipient of numerous State and National Awards. Apart from lecturing & teaching regularly at Harvard and IIM-B on Leadership, he is also the distinguished Frank Rhodes Professor at Cornell University, USA. He has served as the Head and Visiting professor of the Vivekananda Chair of the University of Mysore. He is a Tata Scholar, a Mason Fellow of the Harvard Kennedy School and a Fellow at the Hauser Center for Nonprofits, Harvard University. He writes extensively about Swami Vivekananda and on Development Issues in local Kannada and English newspapers and in his blog at rbalu.wordpress.com, and in The Ve d a n t a K e s a r i a n d o t h e r publications. He runs Leadership workshops for Corporates, NGOs and the Government both within India and Abroad and he is currently researching into the leadership lessons that ancient Indian books and philosophy contain.   • 2. CHAMUNDI The new team of Rotary Mysore office- members for reposing faith in him and bearers for the Rotary year 2014-15 said he would do everything to justify has been unanimously elected. In a brief their confidence. meeting last Thursday at the Rotary announcement Center, PDG R. Guru, in his role as the Returning Officer, announced the team and wished them well. He asked Rotarians to address the inherent challenges that each of us face in terms of balancing time between our workbusiness and Rotary work. He suggested that an Orientation from Rotary stalwarts would be in order for some of thanksgiving the newer office-bearers. Sponsored by Rotary Mysore, the tournament was organized by Mysore Professional Chess Academy. Rtn. M.C.S.Manohara President Rotary Mysore inaugurated the tournament on the 28th Dec. Ms. Veena S.A. Principal IJRPS, Prof. S.K.Ananda Tirtha President MDCA and Sri Biddappa Vice-President MDCA were the Guests of Honour. IJRPS Education Society Hon. Secretary Rtn. Shivanand and team and wishes them many more laurels in future!!! Facts on Polio Eradication Program What do you mean by Pulse Polio Immunization [PPI]? Administration Polio drops to all children below 5 years on a single day all over the country simultaneously is Pulse Polio immunization. The purpose is to replace wild poliovirus with vaccine virus in the country What do you mean by AFP Surveillance? Detection of all cases of Acute Flaccid Paralysis[sudden loss of power in any part of the body] in children below 15 years and subjecting them for detailed investigation to find out whether each case is Polio or not. This is the established method of tracking every case of Polio in a community. When was the Global Polio Eradication Initiative launched? 1988. The world health assembly resolved to eradicate polio by 2000 AD. 167 countries participated in the assembly. Rotary International participated in the assembly. What is NPSP? National Polio Surveillance Project. This is the joint collaboration programme of the Government of India and WHO charged with Sur veillance and implementation of polio eradication progremme in India What was the Global incidence of polio in 1988? 3,50,000 children per year in 120 countries. India accounted for nearly 50000 cases per year. When and where was the last case of Polio detected in India? January 13, 2011. Howrah district in West Bengal [Name of the child: Ruksar Khatun] Who are the partners in Global polio eradication programme? Federal and state governments, World Health Organization, UNICEF, CDC and Rotary International. What is the financial commitment of Rotary International for the global polio eradication programme? 1.2 Billion US $ spent by now. 550 M US $ committed further to complete the programme.
