Easily duplicate missing parts with mold making and casting
1. Easily Duplicate Missing Parts with Mold
Making and Casting
Is your old but sturdy sofa missing a leg for which a substitute is unavailable?
Have the kind of knobs used on your wardrobe gone out of production thus
requiring you to change all of them to compensate for one broken knob? Or, is
2. a damaged wheel keeping you from using an aging but functional machine
anymore?
Well, finding replacement parts for items that are no longer being produced
seems quite an impossible task. After futilely asking around in all the shops for
any forgotten piece from earlier stocks, you either have to ask family and
friends if they happen to have the same part or scour through endless
junkyards or even antique stores in the vain hope of finding what you are
looking for.
Getting a manufacturer to make a custom replacement on order can prove
very expensive – sometimes even more than the price of the old furniture or
machine!
So should you just discard a memorable or functional furniture/equipment just
because you cannot find a replacement for a single part? Well not necessarily
as you can actually restore your furniture or machine to its previous state by
making a duplicate of the missing/broken piece (provided you have another
identical leg, knob or wheel which you can copy).
3. This is where the art of mold making and casting comes into the picture. You
can use the techniques of rubber or clay modeling combined with resin casting
or cold casting to reproduce an exactly similar copy of any piece that you want!
And you need not worry about the finish either as after making a suitable mold
with rubber or clay modeling technique, you can make the final cast in bonded
metal, marble or even wood to accurately match the missing piece – the
colors, textures, carving and engraving can be duplicated as well!
To begin with, you need some basic knowledge of rubber or clay modeling
techniques for making both one and two part molds and also how to make
casts from the molds. Assemble all the required tools, materials and supplies
such as clay for clay modeling, silicone rubber for silicone molds, resin for resin
casts and requisite cold casting powders for the kind of finish you need. Along
with this you will need mixing cups and containers, mixing sticks, gloves, knife,
cardboard boxes, glue and other such accessories.
Always keep in mind that most molding and casting materials have a tendency
to develop air bubbles which can create unsightly blemishes on the surface of
the mold or cast. Therefore, you need to use a vacuum chamber or pressure
pot or at least a vibrating table to get rid of the air bubbles.
4. Once the final cast is ready, you can finish it as desired. And now you have an
identical copy of the missing or broken piece in your hand. So go ahead and
duplicate whatever you want!
