    • Lymphatic System Overview
    • Function
Protects the body from disease and invasion from pathogens
      Removes interstitial fluid from tissues
Absorbs and transports fatty acids and fats to circulatory system
    • Function
Lymph means clear water and is fluid and protein that has been squeezed from blood
Lymph fluid drains from tissue into lymph capillaries
Lymph is drained from tissue and returned to blood
      Lymph nodes filter the fluid
    • Organs of the Lymphatic System
      Bone Marrow
      Lymph Nodes
      Spleen
      Thymus
      Tonsils
    • Organs of the Lymphatic System
The spleen helps body fight infection
      Contains lymphocytes and macrophages
Macrophages engulf and destroy bacteria, dead tissue, and foreign matter
The spleen removes these elements from the bloodstream
    • Organs of the Lymphatic System
      Bone Marrow produces lymphocytes (B-Cells)
T-lymphocytes (T-Cells) mature in the thymus gland
      T-Cells protect us from disease
    • Facts
      Divided into two parts:
      Conducting system
      Lymphoid tissue
Lymph Nodes are bean shaped and range from a few mm to 1-2 cm
The lymphatic system is closely related to the cardiovascular system
The lymphatic system returns about 3.17 quarts of fluid each day to the blood
