Aligning
Vision with
  Action
  Vision without action is merely a dream;
 Action without vision just passes the time;
  Vision with action can change the world.
                                  ‐Joel Arthur Barker
Vision and Goal Alignment
• A vision communicates the team’s overarching purpose for
  forming and its ultimate goal. “The vision describes a target –
  where the team wants to be at some future time, in
  satisfaction of its mission and values.” (Jessup, 1992, p. 66).  It
  is the team’s overarching purpose for existing (Lee, 1993, p.
  26).
• Goals, on the other hand, are “The means a team intends to
  use to achieve an end.” (Lee, p 30).  Simply put, goals are clear,
  concise short‐term steps created and followed to realize the
  vision of a team.
• Most leaders recognize that many teams operate without
  clearly aligned vision and goals.  If a clear direction has not
  been set, it is difficult for team members to know or care if
  they are making progress toward their goals.
• A clear vision and aligned goals allow to develop a framework
  for conducting the required work without a continuous process
  of interpretation and re‐interpretation of meanings.
                                                                         2
