  • 7. The Peace Corps• A program aimed at helping less developednations fight poverty. The Corps sent youngAmericans to perform humanitarian servicesin these countries. They would build roads, laysewer systems, teach English etc. Still activetoday, the Corps remains one of Kennedy’smost enduring legacies.

  • 9. The Bay of Pigs• In 1959 Cuba became a communist country.Just 90 miles from Florida. Almostimmediately Fidel Castro establishes ties withRussia.
  • 10. The Bay of Pigs• The CIA trained and armed Cuban rebels toinvade Cuba and start an uprising againstCastro. On April 17, 1961, 1,400 armed Cubanexiles landed at the Bay of Pigs. The invasionwas a disaster. Kennedy had called off the airsupport to keep the US involvement a secret.Within two days, Castro’s forces killed orcaptured almost all the exiles. This made theUS looked weak and disorganized.

The Cuban Missile Crisis- 13 Days• In the Summer of 1962, the CIA learned that theSoviets had placed long range missiles in Cuba—capable of delivering missiles to the US.• Many advisors said: Invade!!• Kennedy ordered a naval blockade to stop theSoviets from delivering more missiles and hedemanded that they dismantle existing missilesties.• After many secret negotiations, the Soviet Unionoffered a deal—they would remove the missiles ifthe US removed missiles from Turkey and Greeceand promise never to invade Cuba again.
