  • 2. The Ballast Trust
    • Provides a sorting and cataloguing service for business archives with an emphasis on technical records such as shipbuilding, railway and engineering plans, drawings and photographs.
    • It also:
    • Locates and surveys records
    • Rescues and preserves
    • records in danger of destruction

  • 3. History of the Ballast Trust
    • Founded by William Lind in 1988/89
    • Strong links with Centre of Business
    • History at the University of Glasgow
    • Processed over 60 collections
    • (often huge volumes of records)
    • Received 20 tons of records in
    • first 4 years
    • Worked for National Archives of Scotland, Glasgow University, Glasgow City Archives, Scottish Maritime Museum, Mining Museum

  • 4. Supporting Scotland’s Industrial Heritage
    • The Ballast Trust provides the facilities and physical space to process collections as well as the technical expertise and knowledge required to understand these collections and catalogue them fully.

  • 5. How We Work
    • Recruit volunteers with specialist knowledge or enthusiasms
    • Have staff from technical backgrounds with years of experience
    • Match these people to the right collection
    • Catalogue the collection in accordance with each Archive’s standards and systems
    • Once complete the collection is returned and available for public access
