  • Music Video Evaluation
  • We decided to keep to conventions by including the titles at the beginning. This is typical of a music video. It immediately grabs the attention of the view by stating the artitst/song name. The plain black background creates apprehension and expectations for the viewer. They become more eager to watch the video.
  • This is our opening shot. We used a very fast cut here in order to create an immediate upbeat and enthralling atmosphere. It is a low angle showing our artist, Paul, clicking his fingers. The low angle makes him appear in control. Which is significant. The clicking is symbolic – signalling the start of the narrative. View slide
  • This extreme close-up shows our “student-teacher” writing a note. This type of shot allows the reader to get a closer look at what’s happening. They feel more involved in the narrative. View slide
  • Personally, this is one of my favourite cuts. I think that the continuity of this shot looks very realistic and effective. As you can see, as the protagonist leaves one room, he immediately enters a completely different one. This kind of shot would leave the audience feeling perplexed and it would immediately grab their attention.
  • This particular shot is typical of a “performance”-style video. This shows that we have considered and included both a narrative and performance style. Making our video fall under the “conceptual” category.
  • Here is just one example of how we have played on this “alternate universe” theme. Here we have a character on the television watching real-life, rather than the other way around. This creates an unusual and bizarre image for the viewer.
  • This master shot of the side of the house is very unique, yet effective. The shadow of our artist which has been projected on to the wall shows him performing in an interesting and different way. This type of shot could also be symbolic of a real concert performance.
  • Here is another example of our alternate universe theme. It shows an older woman displayed a youthful attire, playing on a games console. We also used a handheld point-of-view shot here to add variety to our piece.
  • This over-the-shoulder shot displays a special effect that we decided to use. It shows our protagonist looking in to a mirror and seeing our artist looking back at him. The use of the mirror is very significant. It is symbolic of our alternate universe. We used this shot quite frequently, switching the positions of the characters in time to the beat of the music.
  • This shot shows another example of our alternate universe. We see a high angled shot of a man who appears to be quite wealthy in terms of his physical appearance… But the way that he is sitting on the street begging for food and money proves otherwise. Because it was dark outside when we filmed this shot, we had to make sure that the lighting was correct and the scene was viewable.
  • In this shot, the artist is interacting with his audience by grabbing and shaking the camera. As though he is addressing them directly. The audience immediately feel more involved and familiar with the artist. He becomes more likable.
  • This is a repeat of the scene that shows at the beginning of the video. However, we decided to reverse it, in order to create an abstract and interesting shot. We also used editing software to alter the hue of the shot. These shots symbolize the transition back in to the real world.
  • Towards the end of the video, we decided to repeat the scene where our artist is scene interacting with the camera and clicking his fingers. This shows that the artist is the one in control here, as if he is manipulating our protagonist. This gives him power and significance. The use of this point-of-view shot (from our protagonists perspective) and the “blur effect” represents the character “blacking-out”. We are put in his shoes.
  • This is one of the concluding shots. The extreme close-up of our protagonists eye represents his “awakening”.
  • Here is our concluding scene. Conventionally, it displays the titles again to show that the video is ending shortly. It is another shot of our artist’s shadow being projected on a brick wall. We decided to end on this shot as we mutually agreed that the effect was good and it also leaves the audience wondering what actually happened to the protagonist.
