Bernal Diaz and Cortes--found Tenochtitlan (at the site of today’s Mexico City) to be the most splendid and beautiful site they had ever seen. Markets, cleanliness, birds and flowers, artists, poets, street theater, prosperity. Then slaughtered the people and destroyed the city within a few years.
