  • Created in the 1990s,  WML wireless markuplangugageSome features of WML 1.x are specific to wireless devices. For example, WML 1.x provides a way for developers to program the softkeys of mobile phones. This feature is not supported in HTML since computers do not have any softkeys.WML supports client-side scripting. The scripting language supported is called WMLScript. • According to a study by ComScore, in 2010 over 45.5 million people in the United States owned smartphones and it is the fastest growing segment of the mobile phone market, which comprised 234 million subscribers in the United States.
  • Nokia is stilla major mobile device maker, that uses Symbian for its smartphones.According to Gartner: there has been over >80 M Symbian devices sold in 2009, most of them being Nokia devices.
  • Microsoft is loosing mobile users, and just over 5% of smartphone devices running Windows Mobile were sold in 2010 so far. With upcoming release of Windows Phone 7, Microsoft hopes these numbers will improve.
  • Android is still not a major player, but is growing pretty fast, and in 2009 nearly 7M devices running Android have been sold, mainly running on HTC and Motorola hardware. It’s worthwhile to mention that both Microsoft and Google tried developing their own hardware for their mobile operating systems, but were not successful in this field and as a result
  • Steve Jobs on Sept. 1: 120MiOS devices have been sold since iPhone was introduced in 2007 and it is estimated that about ½ of them are iPhones.
  • RIM now is a 2nd biggest smartphone producer after Nokia with 18% market share in 2010.
  • Taken from Steve Jobs letter from April, 2010 “Thoughts on Flash”Flash is not open source unlike html5 and is a proprietary software owned by Adobe.75% of video on the web is in Flash, however almost all this video is also available in a more modern format, H.264, and viewable on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Reliability, security and performance. Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009.Battery life:on an iPhone, for example, H.264 videos play for up to 10 hours, while videos decoded in software play for less than 5 hours before the battery is fully drained.Touch: Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot.Adobe also wants developers to adopt Flash to create apps that run on our mobile devices. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features, this ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform.
