1. Georgia Senate Bill 469 Criminalizes Peaceful Protests
Had it been law while Martin Luther King, Jr. was alive,
a peaceful Civil Rights Movement would have been impossible
Don't Let Georgia Lawmakers Turn Back the Clock...
Georgia's General Assembly recently passed legislation attacking women, immigrants, workers,
the poor, and all freedom-loving Georgians. It's NOT too late to stop this madness!!
Among the pending legislation:
SB 469 – This bill will make peaceful civil disobedience punishable by up to one year in jail. Not only that,
but it will make planning acts of civil disobedience a high and aggravated misdemeanor! This bill also
targets unions and anyone involved in a labor dispute – which could, at some point, include anyone who
works for a living. Had this bill existed in the 1960's, a peaceful civil rights movement would have been
impossible.
SB 292 – Requires drug tests for needy Georgians who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
(TANF) - even grandparents and great grandparents who take custody. In Florida, where less than 2% of
applicants tested positive, this law has cost more than it saved.
SB 438 – Bans state employee health insurance plans from offering coverage for abortion services, even
in cases of rape or incest. Republicans pushed this bill to a vote without allowing any debate or
amendments. Not one woman was allowed to speak about this bill.
SB 460 – Would exempt religiously-affiliated businesses from providing birth control coverage. Women
will be denied any contraceptive medicines, even for medical reasons other than birth control.
SB 312 – Needy people who apply for food stamps will be required to participate in “personal growth”
activities in order to receive benefits. This means mothers with children over the age of six will be denied
benefits if they are not taking classes – classes they may have to pay for out of their own pockets. No one
knows where the state will find money to fund this program.
