  • 1. ITC 5320 TELECOMMUNICATIONS IN EDUCATION Summer 2011 Online 2 and Davie County cohorts
  • 2. Schedule <ul><li>The class schedule is online in the AsULearn (asulearn.appstate.edu) </li></ul><ul><li>There are two class sessions for each topic, choose to attend one (i.e. attend either June 7 or 9) </li></ul><ul><li>Three total online meetings (including tonight), finishing the week of July 24 </li></ul><ul><li>Presentations on July 19/21 and the week of July 24 </li></ul>
  • 3. Components <ul><li>Discussion and activities (in groups of 3-5) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Readings on telecom technology issues (Internet safety & online identity) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Discussions in the forums and in class </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>As a group: read, discuss, and post major ideas from one book related to Telecommunication </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Participate in the completion of two projects: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Cross Program Collaboration </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Teaching with Telecommunications options </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>(groups for #1 are already created, for #2 are self-chosen and can be the same or different than your reading groups) </li></ul></ul></ul>

Readings & Discussions <ul><li>Issues for reading discussions listed on the AsULearn site </li></ul><ul><li>The following dates are when discussions are due: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>June 14/16 - online safety </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Week of June 26 - online identity </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Choose two group members to lead/organize your groups’ discussion for each issue </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Discuss in online meetings and on forum </li></ul></ul>
  • 5. Project 1: Cross Program Collaboration <ul><li>Collaborate with students in other programs and other sections of this course </li></ul><ul><li>Students from each course will be assigned to teams, with each representing a role within a school leadership team. The teams will be charged with addressing a scenario of creating a proposal for a utilizing a set of iPads in a school. </li></ul><ul><li>The completed plan must be posted in Teleplace on/before July 16, 2011. </li></ul><ul><li>Full description and list of team members is posted in AsULearn. </li></ul>
  • 6. Project 2: Teaching with Telecommunications Options <ul><li>Choose option 1 or 2 (work in groups of you choosing, or as an individual) to either: </li></ul><ul><li>Develop and use (if possible) learning activities that employ a telecom technology to help students learn some content or skill. </li></ul><ul><li>Develop a distance education course (web-based, video conference, or a combination) that incorporates the best of what we know about distance education. </li></ul><ul><li>For either option, include a summary of the unit/lessons, description of the project, and example telecommunication tools. </li></ul>

Presentation Schedule <ul><li>Project 1: Cross Program Collaboration </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Due on/before July 16 in Teleplace forum </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Discuss in class meetings on July 19/21 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Project 2: Teaching with Telecommunications Options </li></ul><ul><ul><li>As an asynchronous “poster session”, where you will view (and comment on) other groups’ presentations during the week of July 24 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Upload a file on/before July 24 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>See example of last year’s class posters in the Commons area of the AET Zone </li></ul></ul></ul>

Book Related to Telecom and Society <ul><li>In your reading/discussion groups: read, discuss, and post major ideas from one book related to Telecommunications (see list of suggested titles in AsULearn) </li></ul><ul><li>Other books are okay, related to Telcom (Internet, social media, etc.) and society - but email instructor first and briefly describe the topic of the proposed book BEFORE PURCHASING! </li></ul><ul><li>Post your ideas in the Discussion Forum during the semester – each member of your group must participate </li></ul>
  • 9. This Week <ul><li>Introduce yourself on the ITC 5320 Discussion Board </li></ul><ul><li>Begin to form discussion groups, and view articles on Internet safety (find more on your own this week!) listed in the General Readings links in AsULearn </li></ul><ul><li>Explore the Network Basics links in AsULearn (or on the bookshelf materials in our Teleplace forum) </li></ul><ul><li>View the “Warriors of the .Net” video link </li></ul>
