  • 1. ITC 5630 Advanced Web Design for Education Fall 2010 ITC Fall 09 Cohort 1 and ITC Fall 09 Cohort 2
  • 2. Schedule
    • The class schedule is online in AsULearn
    • Two class sessions for each topic, but please stay in your cohort (unless you okay with me in advance)
    • Five total full-class meetings (including tonight), finishing the week of Nov 26
  • 3. Components
    • Web Design Levels 1-5: Personal Portfolio
      • Work though tutorials on web design to develop a 3 page personal portfolio website using an HTML editor
    • Group Project 1: Design a Community Website
      • Design and build a community oriented website for a club or organization of your choice, using a social networking platform like Spruz, Grouply, etc.
    • Group Project 2: Build a Data Website for Teaching
      • Develop a learning activity that allow students to interact with data in a web-embedded spreadsheet that you have created, using Zoho Sheet, EditGrid, etc.
  • 4. Discussions
    • Issues for reading discussions listed on the balcony of the Web Design Workroom in Teleplace
    • The following dates are when you should discuss these topics:
      • Before Sep 12:
        • 1. HTML and Web Design Resources and Tutorials
      • Before Sep 26:
        • 2. Copyright and Web Design
        • 3. Principles of Accessible Design
  • 5. Activity 1: Personal Portfolio Web Design Levels 1-5
    • This activity will begin today and end the week of Sep 26
    • You will work through Level 1 to 5 of web design, listed on the AsULearn site and in the Web Design Workroom in Teleplace
    • There are video tutorials in Atomic Learning to assist for most levels
    • Deliverable: Create a 3 page personal website, hosted on the COE vygotsky server, that includes your homepage, resume/CV, and list of projects from your ITC program courses. Do not use any templates or pre-made HTML pages
    • Due: Your class meeting the week of Sep 26
  • 6. Activity 2: Group Project Design a Community Website
    • Work in groups of 2 to 5 members:
    • Choose a school group or club, community organization, etc. that would need a website to communicate with members and post news
    • Develop a proposal for the site by talking to the members, take notes, summarize their needs
    • Build a simple version of the site using a social networking / community-oriented platform like Ning,, BigTent, etc.
    • Deliverables: Proposal, notes, website address
    • Due: Your class meeting the week of Oct 24
  • 7. Activity 3: Group Project Develop a Data Website for Education
    • Work in groups of 2 to 5 members:
    • Choose a lesson or unit where students could compare data, and/or add to a data set
    • Create a spreadsheet for that data set
    • Explore the capabilities of Zoho Sheet, and EditGrid, and other online spreadsheet/data services
    • Upload your spreadsheet to one of these services, then embed it from there into a website (HTML pages, Google Sites, wiki, blog; any type of site is okay)
    • Deliverables: Lesson/unit description, website URL
    • Due: Your class meeting the week of Nov 26

    • Activity 1: Your Portfolio Web Design (Individual)
      • Week of Sep 12 – Discuss progress, tutorials in class
      • Week of Sep 26 – Present finished web portfolio
    • Activity 2: Design a Community Website (Group)
      • Week of Sep 26 – Begin project, form groups, discuss ideas
      • Week of Oct 24 – Present finished project
    • Activity 3: Develop Data Site for Education (Group)
        • Week of Oct 24 – Begin project, form groups, discuss ideas
        • Week of Nov 26 – Present finished project
  • 9. This Evening / This Week
    • Tour this Teleplace forum, view resources
    • Join a small group discussing good and bad web design (5 each in small group rooms and patio)
    • Over the next week or so…
      • Review Course Resources in AsULearn:
        • Get started with an HTML editor (KompoZer)
        • View tutorial on Atomic Learning
        • Using FileZilla, create a folder on the App State server
        • Work through Levels 1 and 2 of your web portfolio
      • Discuss Topic 1 in the discussion forums
