  • PRESENTSComprehensive Waste and Water Management at Classic OrchardsPresented in the "Self-Sufficient Apartment Communities - An Open House".Conducted on 15-June-2013, by The Alternative and ApartmentADDA.
  • BRIEF INTRODUCTION :CLASSIC ORCHARDS Gated Community located on Bannerghatta Road Layout is spread over 70 acres and has about 500 plots. Presently about 150 independent houses (30%) havebeen constructed and occupied. Current population of approx. 700 occupants. Expectedto grow by 25% in next 1 year.
  • SITUATION 2 YEARS AGO: BWSSB water connection to each house in the layout 5 Common Bore wells – back up Open Well – used only for common area gardening STP – Processed and let-out into drains Presented large scope for improvement.
  • ECO DRIVE: STP - REHAUL Step 1: 2 extra storage tanks for STP toarrest loss of 70KLD of recycled water. Step 2: STP processed water used forgardening purposes. Going Forward: Supply processed STP water connections toall individual households for gardening. Provide water for construction activities.

  • ECO DRIVE: ZERO WASTE DISCHARGE Street plays, guest lecturesand demos to createawareness. Waste segregation byhouseholds and organiccomposting at communitylevel.
  • ECO CONSCIOUSNESS DRIVE: EXTEND GREEN COVER Tree plantation by childrenand residents of the layout. Control soil erosion alongthe roads by plantingbushes and grass.
  • ECO DRIVE: UNDERSTATING THE PROBLEM Initiated a survey with Biome EnvironmentalSolutions: CO consumed much more than averageconsumption of Bangalore per household. 270K sqm area of CO, potential of 143K KL ofrainwater harvest at 970mm of annual rainfall. Translates into not just 100% self-sufficiency, butalso twice the water surplus as per currentconsumption.

  • ECO CONSCIOUSNESS DRIVE: RAINWATERHARVESTING PLAN Use existing wells as collection point for rainwater flowingthrough the open drains. All open drains by the roads lead to 2 open wells within the layout. To facilitate the ground water discharge, open wells have been recentlydesilted. Identified 40 locations as recharge wells to improve ground watertable. 3 recharge wells have been commissioned to study the waterpercolation into the ground. Club-house rooftop rainwater is being reutilised by collecting thewater in tanks. Water collected in these tanks is used for housekeeping and gardeningpurposes of the club-house.
