  • It seems to exalt UX above other creative disciplines in an odd manner. Restauranteurs and chefs are also concerned about the experience of the 'user'. Architects are concerned about the feeling of the spaces they design and how they facilitate human interactions and tasks.

UX is understood to refer to human computer interaction -- but usability and experience are also valued within other disciplines.

I'm not sure if you are looking for suggestions but I think perhaps if the story could move from the value of the user experience and emotional resonance of interactions towards a focus on a more explicit discussion of UX -- as a full-fledged focus and discipline within technology. Sort of like less disciplined approaches to a more disciplined approach within this particular market sphere. I suppose it will depend on the audience but I think regardless being a little less dismissive of other disciplines will make it stronger.

    Best regards.

  • Yep, of course business goals is important :)
it is the first motivation in Customer Service Design with their Users Goals... If your service answer correctly to Business goals & User goals it is a good first step... if you integrate User Experience, Interaction design, etc. it is a second good step (can give your design usability & pleasure).

a new step is this one : to go further, you can ask yourself 'how to design a service that can answer to my client goals, to my company goals and to my employee goal...' including business target, usabilty, customer goal, employee goal, productivity and pleasure... :)

why this question ? because now that internet is a real sales & distribution channel, a lot of services will be share between client and employee.

In fact we have 3 targets to reach :
    1. Productivity & Pleasure : usually for the employee
    2. User Goal & Pleasure : mainly for the client
    3. Company Business Goals

at last, to help your Design, give you plurimedia target (the Design of my Service must answer correctly on desktop computer, tablet, smartphone to give my users a global experience)

It is the project i work for : http://tinyurl.com/cbp333k (french only, sorry ;-)
to have a unified customer employee multi channel portal (PUCC)...

  • Good one. Yes, UX is not just making User happy, it is about 'how to achieve business goals, without alienating the users'. Empathy rules, and it brings more business. Empathy is the key pillar in UX.

  • I missed something important in those slides, thanks to Joel Marsh for pointing it out to me.

UX is not only about making the product a pleasure for users to use.
It's about designing a product that's achieve it's business goals in a pleasurable way to users.

    'Imagine this (idiotic) scenario:

You make an online catalogue that is beautiful, and fun to browse, and has new content often, and social features, and millions of people come and hang out there every day. But you forget the buy buttons, so everyone is just looking, and not putting anything in their cart.

If you're the UX designer, have you succeeded because everyone is so happy? Maybe... but you'll go out of business pretty quickly. So, in my opinion, you have failed.

UX designers are not ambassadors of happiness. We're persuaders.

That's the fallacy with UX. Our objective is not to make users have a good time. Our objective is to make our revenue stream something that they enjoy using. BIG difference.' - Joel Marsh
