San Francisco Museum of Performance and Design Jury Prize Honorable Mention Fall 2008.Performance and design require aviewer. The design of this museumplays with visual access via thestrategic sectional aggregation oftubes.tectonicMaterial research with drinkingstraws uncovered the intriguingvisual effects of the tube form inaggregate. This porous solid allowsfor variations in visual accessdepending on the scale of tube andrelative position.
  3. 3. program layout Performance is viewed collectively, so the theater is located at the center of the building, pushing out through the south facade to meet the city. The design gallery wraps the theater, bringing both modes of viewing together. Performances in the theater can be viewed at a distance from the occupiable niches, as well as glimpsed through denser screens. The aggregated tubes mediatevisual access to the theater space,at once exposing it and denyingtotal access.

  7. 7. California College of the Arts: Material Practice. Instructor - Andrew Kudless. The design of this table emerged from aninvestigation of flexible formwork. Theformwork consists of stockings sewn Flexible Formwork Poured Concrete Tabletogether at the tops suspended in arectangular jig. Each time it is poured, the concrete deforms the flexible formwork differently, resulting in an infinitely variable physical form within a single method of fabrication. The final table is internally reinforced with thick wire, and is strong enough to support the weight of a person.
  8. 8. California College of the Arts Thesis. Adviser - David Gissen. Emergent Legibility - The Alphabetical Materiality of Non Place Independent Thesis Award 2009.Marc Augé defines non-placeas a space mediated by textand defined more by its legible“instructions for use” thantraditional architectural notionsof space. This thesis finds thatalphabetical language goesbeyond instrumentality toestablish a rich materiality ofspace.Legibility is not merelycompensatory, rather,it contains the potential togenerate architecture. The final design experiment, seen here, seeks to take controlof alphabetical language asarchitectural material.Using a limited set of tectonicmoves, the experiment doesestablish an alphabeticalfield containing orchestratedemergent legibility, whichprovides a first step for furtherexploration of emergentlegibility within the alphabeticalmateriality of non-place.
