 Synonyms

Formula: K Br.
Molecular Weight: 119.
Preparation:-Potassium bromide may be produced by treating a solution of bromide of iron
with a solution of potassium carbonate as long as any precipitate occurs. The whole is to
be thrown upon a filter and the precipitate washed with boiling distilled water, the washings added
to the filtrate and the solution evaporated till crystallization is completed. The crystals are to be
collected and dried on bibulous paper and kept in a well-stoppered bottle. As prepared by the above
process, the bromide has a slight alkaline reaction, but by the German Pharmacopoeia, the
compound is required to behave indifferently to both red and blue litmus paper.

 Amount of drug power:- 1/100.
 Dilutions must be prepared as directed under Class:- V,B.
 Triturations of the pure bromide of potassium are prepared as directed
under:- Class VII.

 Properties:-A solution of potassium bromide, when treated with dilute sulphuric acid, should
remain colorless, a reddish or reddish-yellow color indicating the presence of
bromine from decomposed bromate. If silver nitrate be added to a solution of the salt, the
resulting precipitate should be completely soluble in dilute ammonia or nearly so. A faint
opalescent turbidity due to silver bromide is permissible. Should a milky turbidity or a real
precipitate occur, it may be due to excess of silver bromide or to silver iodide, or to both; by
treating it with caustic ammonia, all the silver bromide will be dissolved, and any residue then is
due to silver iodide. The presence of iodide may be also determined by adding to a solution of
potassium bromide a drop of chloride water, when, upon adding starch solution, the well-known
blue color of the so-called iodide of starch will be perceived.

Properties:-Potassium bromide is in tolerably large, white, glistening,
cubical crystals, which are permanent in the air. They have a pungent, saline
taste; their specific gravity is 2.4. They are soluble in two parts of water at 0° C.
(32° F.), in one and a half parts at 20° C. (68° F.), in one of boiling water and in
180 parts of 90 per cent. alcohol. When heated, the crystals decrepitate, and at a
low red heat melt without decomposition; at a bright red heat they gradually
sublime.

CHEMISTRY:- Colourless crystals or white granules or powder, consisting
of 67.14% bromine and 32.86% potassium. Hygroscopic and sensitive to
moisture. Dissolves readily in water: 1 gram dissolves in 1.5 ml water and in
1 ml boiling water. It is very stable compound, but incompatible with strong
oxidizing agents, strong acids, bromine trifluoride and bromine trichloride.

 MEDICINAL USE Potassium bromide is an very old anticonvulsant,
which was used in the 1800s as both an anticonvulsant and sedative. It was first
prescribed as a substitute for potassium iodide, under the idea that it possessed similar
curative qualities. It was used for secondary syphilis, mercurial poisoning,
enlargements of the liver, spleen, tumours, scrofula, etc. Jackson was the first to
recommend it in epilepsy, based on the idea that by removing the syphilitic
disease the epilepsy would disappear. In later years it was recommended and used in
whooping cough and various spasmodic affections.

 USES Used in manufacture of photographic papers and plates; in
process engraving; for the manufacture of special soaps; in
spectroscopy and infrared transmission; as a laboratory reagent.

TOXICITY Potassium bromide causes central nervous system depression, eye and
skin irritation, and digestive tract irritation with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. The
central nervous system depression is characterised by excitement, followed by
headache, dizziness, blurred vision, unconsciousness, coma and possible death due to
respiratory failure. Prolonged exposure may cause mental changes such as
hallucinations, depression, memory loss, irritability, ataxia, psychosis, and possibly
coma. Chronic bromism has been associated with toxic psychosis resembling
paranoid schizophrenia, personality changes, and mania with paranoid delusions.

TOXICITY Administration of sodium chloride will increase the elimination of
potassium bromide from the kidney, since chloride will be conserved at the cost of
bromide. High salt diets decrease the effects of potassium bromide. As an oral medication it
is used to control seizures and epilepsy in dogs, although it may take 4-5 months before full
effects occurs. Signs of overdosing [in dogs] include drowsiness, loss of appetite, vomiting,
constipation, pancreatitis, muscle pain, staggering, decreased or slow reflexes, pupils of
different sizes, and tremors.

 The greater part of the pathogenesis is made up of symptoms observed in allopathic
overdosings to which are added symptoms cured in the practice of homeopaths.
 In old-school practice kali-br. Has been given in epileptic and other convulsive
disorders with the idea of overwhelming disease than of curing it. The effect has
been in numberless cases to reduce or prevent the recurrence of epileptic attacks.

 Along with this it has produced a great variety of skin eruptions. At the same time,
Kali-br. has a decidedly specific relation to epilepsy and the epileptic state and in its
own cases will cure in the potencies.
 One of the most troublesome "accidents" of the allopathic use of Kali-br. is the
production of eruptions of many kinds, but most notably acne. Acne has a very
definite relation to the sexual organs, being especially noticeable at puberty and in
women at the menstrual period. Clark knew of no remedy of such universal
usefulness in cases of simple acne as in Kali-br. 30c.

It has produced moist eruptions and pityriasis of the scalp. The sebaceous follicles are
particularly affected, which should give it a place in seboerrhea. Erythema nodosum
was observed in some patients under its influence.
The old-school contra-indications for the Bromides are: General weakness and
feebleness of the nervous system, post-typhoid and post-puerperal insanity, senile
softening of the brain and when the gastro-intestinal mucous membrane is irritated
(Hare). These are keynotes for Kali-br. in potencies.

 These patients are very meticulous and organized. The look of the patient is embarrassed

bromatum. Sexual fantasies are quite prominent and they may have perversions such as
sexual desire for their mother or sister. Looks on all sides to see if people are observing him,
he feels highly guilty, like a criminal. A colleague found Kalium bromatum indicated in a
real criminal, who insisted that his memory for that period during which he had committed
the crime was blank (Phatak: Amnesic aphasia).

 Apoplexy: A venerable term for a stroke, a cerebrovascular
accident (CVA), often associated with loss of consciousness
and paralysis of various parts of the body. The word
"apoplexy" comes from the Greek "apoplexia" meaning a

 Long-continued anaemia resulted in lack or nutriment to the brain tissue, and as
a consequence there developed depression, melancholia, insanity and signs of

 Tabes dorsalis, also known as syphilitic myelopathy, is a slow
degeneration (specifically, demyelination) of the nerves primarily in
the dorsal columns (posterior columns) of the spinal cord (the portion
closest to the back of the body). These nerves normally help maintain a
person's sense of position (proprioception), vibration, and
discriminative touch.

 Taste foul, salty, lost. Anorexia, foul breath, salty taste in
mouth. Thirst intense with dry mouth. Troublesome
pressure at stomach after diner, lassitude.

 Excessive sexual desire with constant erections at night. Debility and

Moist eruptions. Acne simplex and indurate, bluish red, pustular, worse
on face and chest. Eruption of small boils in successive crops with
troublesome itching. Large indolent, painful pustules, boils. Long lasting
scrofulous ulcerations. Syphilitic psoriasis.

 Cholera infantum with reflex cerebral irritation, jerking and twitching of
muscles. Green watery stools with rapid collapse. Rectal polyps, persistent
diarrhea, much blood expelled. Painless diarrhea with great chilliness, even in a
hot room. Stools, watery (like rice-water), painless. Asiatic cholera, first stage,
vomiting, cramps, rice-water discharges, restores secretion of urine. Constipation,
stools very dry, hard and infrequent.
