  • Purpose of this task: Quantify the extent of drainage, flooding, and erosion problems, sources, and hazards in the BSV area, and develop preliminary solutions to mitigate the identified concerns. My purpose in this presentation is to give a picture of how we used ArcGIS in combination with the use of the Trimble GeoXT Handheld and ATVs in the field to more accurately and efficiently map the BSV area.
  • Key Points: size of the area, length to cover of the washes – how to do this efficiently and accurately
  • Decided to use the Trimble GeoXT and use ATVs to cover more ground in less time.
  • There is a lot of other mobile software out there for the Trimble and other mobile PDA like devices.
  • Stage 2 analysis also used all of the above data
  • Purple areas are active alluvial fans.
  • Maps before field verification.
  • Gaps are due to crashing the Trimble because of the large Landforms shapefile (from driving so quickly) or just losing the signal.
  • This tracklog can then be used to georeference your photos so you know exactly where your photos were taken.
  • 160 miles along 34 primary washes. Point out where Phoenix is and where I-10 is. Note the location of White Tanks Wash, also Wagner Wash.

  • Here is me with our makeshift “survey rod” with the Trimble attached using a mount.

  • Red Lines are the Erosion Hazard Setbacks, The Blue lines are the Floodplain, and the yellow dots are our tracklog as we verified the floodplain limits + 50ft versus the Erosion Setbacks based on the low flow banklines & flow rates.
  • 3 drainage basins above the three flood retarding structures (or levees), roughly 100 sq miles in size total.
