EMILY BERGER / NANCY MANTER /ANNE RUSSINOF
SEEING THROUGH
490 ATLANTIC GALLERY is pleased to present recent paintings by Emily Berger, Nancy Manter and
Anne Russinof. “Seeing Through” explores the process by which we see and interpret our visual and
psychological worlds. These three artists investigate and construct forms or places that speak to the
flux, change and beauty of the ever changing environment in which we live. Process characterizes
each artist’s work. Layering rich marks, brushstrokes and surfaces they create complex and mysteri-
ous spaces that hover between what is visually close and almost tactile, to far and deep space. Middle
ground is often hidden or eliminated through structures that are loosely based on the grid, on line or
somewhere in between. The influence of landscape is in the periphery of these artists’ vision. It has
been seen, experienced and reinvented, much like a small window that opens up to an expansive
view. Fluidly painted, wet or dry in medium, on canvas, wood or aluminum panels, the work captures
forms that are concrete and yet also temporal and transitory. These artists explore the balance be-
tween what is constructed and what is chaotic, making their paintings seem timeless and yet also
startlingly fresh. Overlapping this show at 490 Atlantic Gallery is a related window installation of
works on paper by these three artists at nearby Soapbox Gallery from May 24-June 6.
