• Rue Herb (Ruta graveolens) is a plant of the rue family (Rutaceae).
Since rue has a long history as a medicinal herb, it is assumed that
its botanical name “Ruta” comes from the Greek word“rhutos”,
which means “protected”.
Rue originates from the Mediterranean, and in the early Middle
Ages, Benedictines brought her to Central Europe. Today, it is
widespread in the Mediterranean countries, Central and Southern
Europe, North America and Australia. In the Mediterranean region
it grows wild in the warm, dry, rocky and calcareous soils, while in
other areas it is grown. Some time ago ruta graveolens was much
cultivated in gardens as an ornamental, spice and medicinal herb.
Today, it is the most widely grown only as an ornamental plant, and
there are cultivars with blue, gold or colorful leaves.

• Hildegard von Bingen has often described anti-aphrodisiac action of the plant and recommend it
against watery eyes and melancholy. As a traditional herb that helps prevent vision loss, Ruta
Graveolens was appreciated by students, writers, sculptors and painters. Leonardo da Vinci and
Michelangelo have even claimed that it improved their eye and creative vision. Rue herb was
appreciated also by Sebastian Kneipp who had recommended it as a mean of strengthening of the
body (similar to Cordyceps Sinensis Benefits) and against clogged veins.

read here about patchouli essential oil), which has from 0.05 to 0.07% in euta graveolens. Essential
oil ruta greveolens is toxic, but because it contains substances and have antibiotic and disinfectant
action, its essential oil is used in cosmetics and perfume industry. In addition to essential oils, rue

substances, resins, rubber, alkaloids, coumarins and flavonoids, the most rutin and quercetin.
Rutin, which is located in rue protects blood vessels and prevents bleeding as a result of high blood
pressure, varicose veins and edema in the extremities. Since it rutin is for the first time found in
ruta greaveolens, hence the name. The plant also contains furocoumarins that promote tanning
due to sun, but they also have some unintended consequences. More recently, in the ruta
graveolens is found a substance that could potentially help against multiple sclerosis and prevent
pregnancy, but such action of ruta graveolens plant is is still being investigated.
Although common rue contaisn toxic essential oil, it has numerous medicinal properties and has
long been used in folk medicine. In medicinal purposes are used fresh or dried above-ground parts
of the plant, and usually only flowering tops and leaves only. In folk medicine of Eastern countries
the seeds of rue herb are used(we highly recommend “Chia Seeds Benefits and Side Effects”
