  • 2. Statement of the Problem
    • All the workers of the factory are on strike
    • Labour Union wants GM to apologize to the driver in front of all the workers
    • Management is not ready to accept this
    • What should the management do ???

    • Leather manufacturing company in Uttar Pradesh
    • Still in growing stage
    • Company had to face many problems in and around the area
    • - Every step affected the brand value and growth
    • - Managing the public image was important
  • 4. The Case GM got late for the meeting as the driver failed to turn up Drunken driver shouted back at the GM GM Screamed at the driver GM found the driver in drunken state after the meeting GM slapped the driver out of anger
  • 5. The Case… contd…
    • Due to this incident the labour union went on strike
    • They demanded an apology from the GM to the driver in front of all 350 workers
    • The management did not accept this demand as it would create problems related to power dynamics

    • Company's brand image
    • Company is facing a major monetary loss
    • Possibility of losing out on new assignments
    • Management’s power dynamics
    • Morale of the workers
  • 7. Analysis of the problem
    • Driver’s Fault
    • Lack of responsibility
    • Lack of communication skills
    • Manager’s Fault
    • Emotional Outburst
    • No back up plans for an important meeting

    • Talk to Union Leader and the Driver inside the office
      • Tell driver about his negligence towards the work
      • Accept your mistake too, and apologize in the office
      • Pacify the union leader and ask him to end the strike
  • 9. Merits
    • The strike ends – Moral victory of laborers
    • Management will not lose power dynamics
    • The matter is solved amicably
    Demerits
    • Morale of the manager will go down a bit

    • GM apologizes
      • Make the driver realize about his negligence towards the work in front of the Union Leader
      • Pacify the union leader by telling him the losses incurred due to driver’s fault which could affect the workers’ job and salary as well.
      • Get an official letter signed from the driver (dictating that an action can be taken against him) – as the driver was on fault
      • Agree to apologize but in that case an action would be taken against the driver like demotion, firing, etc.
  • 11. Merits
    • Moral victory for the workers – the strike ends
    • Since an action would be taken against the driver, so the power dynamics will not be lost
    • After the action is taken then all the workers will have a fear of losing out if they commit any mistake
    Demerits
    • Morale of the management goes down
    • A strike is provoked once again at the time of taking the action
    • Union leader might not agree for taking action against the driver
  • 12.
    • Pay cut for the Laborers
      • Tell laborers that the management will apologize to the driver in front of Union leader inside the office
      • Put up a notice mentioning the pay cuts for all the laborers in case they do not end the strike
      • Solve the matter with the driver and the union leader.

    • Daily pay is the most important thing for workers. It may result in an immediate end to strike
    • Power dynamics of the management is not lost
    Demerits
    • The union leader might not agree
    • Strike may get aggravated further due to pay cuts
  • 14. Preferred Solution
    • Solve the matter with the driver inside the office taking Union Leader into confidence by making him realize the mistakes done by the driver
  • 15. Why this Solution?
    • Amicable solution to the problem.
    • The power of the management is not lost
    • The union leader can make all the workers understand the management’s point of view
    • Win Win situation for both management and the workers
  • 16. Summary
    • Problem : Deadlock between the management and the union – strike on
    • Possible Solutions:
      • #1 – Pacify the driver taking union leader into confidence
      • #2 – GM apologize but take an action against the driver
      • #3 – Pay cuts for all the workers
    • Best Solution and Plan of Action : Sove the matter with the driver and union leader
      • Benefits : Amicable solution, No power dynamics loss, Strike ends
