    Notes on slide 1

Slides ini hanya sebagai pembanding saja antara teori asli dari buku DDC 21 dengan slides yang sudah pernah saya buat kemarin

    Taken from Vol.I of 4 DDC 21 , OCLC 1996

Beri contoh ttg sebuah subjek yang berkaitan dengan banyak disiplin ilmu: clothing,…apalagi donk….

Main class 000 is the most general class, and is used for works not limited to any one specific discipline, e.g. encyclopedias, newspapers, general periodicals.

    Dasar-dasar Klasifikasi - Presentation Transcript

    1. Penggunaan Klasifikasi DDC di Perpustakaan Sekolah Anggi Hafiz Al Hakam Singapore School – Kelapa Gading Mitchell, Joan S.(ed)(et.al). 1996. Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 21 . New York: OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc.
    2. What It Is and What It Does
      • Provides a system for organizing knowledge represented in any form e.g., books, documents, electronic records.
      • Notation is the system of symbols used to represent the classes in a classification system.
      • Provides a unique identifying code that is used as an “address” on the shelf
      • A tag for library recordkeeping in circulation and inventory control.
    3. Conceptual Framework
      • Basic classes are organized by disciplines or fields of study – The parts of the classification are arranged by discipline , not by subject .
      • As consequence, no single place for a given subject. A subject may appear in any discipline.
    4. Notation
      • DDC is divided into ten main classes which together cover the entire world of knowledge.
      • These classes into ten divisions and each divisions into ten sections
    5. Notation (continued)
      • 000 Generalities ( Class )
      • 010 Bibliography ( Division )
      • 100 Philosophy, paranormal phenomena, psychology
      • 150 Psychology
      • 158 Applied Psychology ( Section )
      • 200 Religion
      • 300 Social Sciences
      • 400 Language
      • 500 Natural Sciences and mathematics
      • 600 Technology (Applied Sciences)
      • 700 The Arts Fine and decorative arts
      • 800 Literature and rhetoric
      • 900 Geography, history, and auxiliary disciplines
    6. Principle of Hierarchy
      • Hierarchy in the DDC is expressed through structure and notation
      • Structural hierarchy means that all topics (aside from the ten main classes) are subordinate to and part of all the broader topics above it
      • Notational hierarchy is expressed by length of notation
    7. Classifying with the DDC
      • Requires determination of the subject, the disciplinary focus, and if applicable, the approach or form
    8. Determining the Subject of a Work
      • The title is often a clue t the subject, but never be the sole source of analysis
      • The table of contents may list the main topics discussed
      • The preface or introduction usually states the author’s purpose
      • If a foreword is provided, it often indicates the subject of the work and suggests the place of the work in the development of thought on the subject
    9. Determining the Subject…(2)
      • A Scan of the text itself may provide further guidance or confirm preliminary subject analysis
      • Bibliographical references and index entries are sources of subject information
      • Cataloging copy from centralized cataloging services is often helpful by providing subject headings, classification numbers, and notes
      • Occasionally, consultation of outside sources such as reviews, reference works and subject experts may be required to determine the subject of the work
