Is there anybody from another country in this class?
Could you find those countries on the map?
And
Euskal Herria ?
Today we are going to learn about our world N S E W
What’s a map?
It is like a photography taken from the ‘ Discovery ’.
The Discovery is a spacecraft to transport people and cargo between earth and space.
The people that drive these space vehicles are called
“ astronauts”
Let’s close your eyes: We are all
Imagine for a couple of minutes we all are astronauts.
We are now in space orbiting the Earth… Travelling into space…
… What can you see? astronauts!
Huston we have a problem!
Can somebody help us?
The map is a flat picture and our world is round, so we can represent better the earth (our planet) in …
… a globe .
Two colours on the planet!
Huston we can see two colours on the planet: Blue and brown /green
Can we know what they represent?
Oh yes! Blue stands for water and brown /green stands for land .
No real separations
The great bodies of salt water surrounding the great land masses are called the oceans .
We can distinguish into the oceans also some smaller parts: The different seas .
The world’s land is divided into five giant pieces: The continents .
And into the continents we distinguish different countries .
N S E W AFRICA ASIA AMERICA AUSTRALASIA EUROPE ARCTIC OCEAN ATLANTIC OCEAN INDIAN OCEAN SOUTHERN OCEAN PACIFIC OCEAN
The Olympic flag
Look at this flag.
What do you know about it?
Very good, it is the Olympic flag. It has five interlocking colourer rings (circles) on a white background.
The colours
The rings represent the five major land areas, and they are interlocked to show friendship among the nations. The white background symbolises peace.
Each continent has its own colour: Blue for Europe , Black for Africa , red for America , yellow for Asia , and Green for Australasia .
Each ocean can be coloured in a different blue: Arctic or Northern Ocean , Atlantic O. , Pacific O. , Indian O. , and Southern or Antarctic O.
What are we going to do with this information?
Make a chart about the Earth
Complete and colour a world map:
- Using the names of continents and oceans.
- Using for each Continent the respective colour of the Olympic flag.
Place in the map the place where you live, where you born and other three places you like or you know from three different continents.
This is a blank map :
The graphic representation of the earth on a plan
with nothing written .

This is the map!

This is our presentation:
This is a world map.
In the world there is land and water.
The world’s land is divided into five big giant pieces called ‘ continents ’.
We have coloured the continents with the colours of the Olympic flag: Blue for Europe , Black for Africa , red for America , yellow for Asia , and Green for Australasia .
The great bodies of salt water surrounding the continents are the ‘ oceans ’.
There are five oceans coloured in different blues: Arctic or Northern Ocean , Atlantic O. , Pacific O . , Indian O. , and Southern or Antarctic O .
This is Bilbo, we have chosen Bilbo because we live here. And this is …. We have chosen … because this companion born there.
This is …, we have chosen that city/village/country because it is famous for…
Remember: Continents & Oceans Africa America Australasia Asia Europe Continents Indian O. Atlantic O. Arctic O. or Northern O. Pacific O. Southern O. Or Antarctic O.
