  • 2. What’s a map? <ul><li>It is like a photography taken from the ‘ Discovery ’. </li></ul><ul><li>The Discovery is a spacecraft to transport people and cargo between earth and space. </li></ul><ul><li>The people that drive these space vehicles are called </li></ul>“ astronauts”
  • 3. Let’s close your eyes: We are all <ul><li>Imagine for a couple of minutes we all are astronauts. </li></ul><ul><li>We are now in space orbiting the Earth… Travelling into space… </li></ul>… What can you see? astronauts!
  • 4. Huston we have a problem! <ul><li>Can somebody help us? </li></ul><ul><li>The map is a flat picture and our world is round, so we can represent better the earth (our planet) in … </li></ul><ul><li>… a globe . </li></ul>
  • 5. Two colours on the planet! <ul><li>Huston we can see two colours on the planet: Blue and brown /green </li></ul><ul><li>Can we know what they represent? </li></ul><ul><li>Oh yes! Blue stands for water and brown /green stands for land . </li></ul>
  • 6. No real separations <ul><li>The great bodies of salt water surrounding the great land masses are called the oceans . </li></ul><ul><li>We can distinguish into the oceans also some smaller parts: The different seas . </li></ul><ul><li>The world’s land is divided into five giant pieces: The continents . </li></ul><ul><li>And into the continents we distinguish different countries . </li></ul>N S E W AFRICA ASIA AMERICA AUSTRALASIA EUROPE ARCTIC OCEAN ATLANTIC OCEAN INDIAN OCEAN SOUTHERN OCEAN PACIFIC OCEAN
  • 7. The Olympic flag <ul><li>Look at this flag. </li></ul><ul><li>What do you know about it? </li></ul><ul><li>Very good, it is the Olympic flag. It has five interlocking colourer rings (circles) on a white background. </li></ul>
  • 8. The colours <ul><li>The rings represent the five major land areas, and they are interlocked to show friendship among the nations. The white background symbolises peace. </li></ul><ul><li>Each continent has its own colour: Blue for Europe , Black for Africa , red for America , yellow for Asia , and Green for Australasia . </li></ul><ul><li>Each ocean can be coloured in a different blue: Arctic or Northern Ocean , Atlantic O. , Pacific O. , Indian O. , and Southern or Antarctic O. </li></ul>

What are we going to do with this information? <ul><li>Make a chart about the Earth </li></ul><ul><li>Complete and colour a world map: </li></ul><ul><li>- Using the names of continents and oceans. </li></ul><ul><li>- Using for each Continent the respective colour of the Olympic flag. </li></ul><ul><li>Place in the map the place where you live, where you born and other three places you like or you know from three different continents. </li></ul>

This is our presentation: <ul><li>This is a world map. </li></ul><ul><li>In the world there is land and water. </li></ul><ul><li>The world’s land is divided into five big giant pieces called ‘ continents ’. </li></ul><ul><li>We have coloured the continents with the colours of the Olympic flag: Blue for Europe , Black for Africa , red for America , yellow for Asia , and Green for Australasia . </li></ul><ul><li>The great bodies of salt water surrounding the continents are the ‘ oceans ’. </li></ul><ul><li>There are five oceans coloured in different blues: Arctic or Northern Ocean , Atlantic O. , Pacific O . , Indian O. , and Southern or Antarctic O . </li></ul><ul><li>This is Bilbo, we have chosen Bilbo because we live here. And this is …. We have chosen … because this companion born there. </li></ul><ul><li>This is …, we have chosen that city/village/country because it is famous for… </li></ul>
