The Truth About Some Of The Facts Presented

 1. 1. The truth about some of the facts present ed in the trailer… a scientific perspective The House of Numbers HIV AIDS
 2. 2. “ AIDS is not a disease is a lot of different things”
 3. 3. “ AIDS is not a disease is a lot of different things” AIDS= A cquired I mmuno d eficiency S yndrome.

Correct

syndrome = a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality or condition.
 4. 4. “ AIDS is not a disease is a lot of different things” AIDS= A cquired I mmuno d eficiency S yndrome.

Correct

syndrome = a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality or condition. it doesn’t mean that HIV is not the cause of AIDS. It means that there is not one symptom associated with AIDS but multiples ones.
 5. 5. “ AIDS is not a disease is a lot of different things” AIDS= A cquired I mmuno d eficiency S yndrome.

Definition by DCD:

- being HIV+,

- low number of a particular type of immune cella (a CD4+ count of less than 200,

- AND having an “opportunistic infection” (like Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia OR, a rare cancer).

AIDS is the last phase of HIV infection.

Correct

syndrome = a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality or condition. it doesn’t mean that HIV is not the cause of AIDS. It means that there is not one symptom associated with AIDS but multiples ones.
 6. 6. “ HIV testing”
 7. 7. “ HIV testing” Why asking all this personal questions:
 8. 8. “ HIV testing” Why asking all this personal questions: Knowing whether you had risky behaviors (unprotected sex, use of dirty needles, syringes,..)
 9. 9. “ HIV testing” Why asking all this personal questions: Help to establish the risk you have to have HIV (risk factor, the more risky behavior, the more change to be HIV positive) Knowing whether you had risky behaviors (unprotected sex, use of dirty needles, syringes,..)
 10. 10. “ HIV testing” Why asking all this personal questions: Help to inform you how to avoid those behaviors (condom use, use of sterile needles,…) Help to establish the risk you have to have HIV (risk factor, the more risky behavior, the more change to be HIV positive) Knowing whether you had risky behaviors (unprotected sex, use of dirty needles, syringes,..)
 11. 11. “ HIV testing” Two ways of determine if you are HIV positive
 12. 12. “ HIV testing” Looking at the presence of antibodies in the blood, which will indicate that you had encountered the virus Because when your body is in the presence of a germ or a virus it develops antibodies to fight that pathogen. Two ways of determine if you are HIV positive
 13. 13. “ HIV testing” Looking for the actual presence of the virus in the DNA of the blood cells Because the HIV virus puts its DNA into the DNA of your blood cells Two ways of determine if you are HIV positive Looking at the presence of antibodies in the blood, which will indicate that you had encountered the virus Because when your body is in the presence of a germ or a virus it develops antibodies to fight that pathogen .
 14. 14. “ HIV testing” The first method is faster but is less accurate than the second one. There is no zero error method that-s why it’s done multiple times AND why the personal questionnaire is important to establish the patient’s risk factor. NEVERTHELESS get tested or avoid risky behavior!!! Two ways of determine if you are HIV positive Looking for the actual presence of the virus in the DNA of the blood cells Because the HIV virus puts its DNA into the DNA of your blood cells Looking at the presence of antibodies in the blood, which will indicate that you had encountered the virus Because when your body is in the presence of a germ or a virus it develops antibodies to fight that pathogen .
 15. 15. “ HIV differs in the world”
 16. 16. “ HIV differs” Differences between people
 17. 17. “ HIV differs” Differences between people We are not all equal, some people have different sizes, body shapes, hair color,….
 18. 18. “ HIV differs” Differences between people We are not all equal, some people have different sizes, body shapes, hair color,…. The same is true for germs, viruses, pathogens We don’t respond in the same way
 19. 19. “ HIV differs” Differences between people We are not all equal, some people have different sizes, body shapes, hair color,…. The same is true for germs, viruses, pathogens We don’t respond in the same way In the same family some may have the flue others not BUT no one is disputing the existence of the virus causing the flue!!
 20. 20. The reasons for these different responses can be genetic, environmental or nutritional
 21. 21. The reasons for these different responses can be genetic, environmental or nutritional The scientific community is actively researching on this phenomena.
 22. 22. “ HIV differs” Differences between the U.S and Uganda
 23. 23. “ HIV differs” Differences between the U.S and Uganda No one will argue that the consequences of having a flue in a country where you can have medicine and food are different than if you live in a country were most people can afford medicine and proper nutrition.
 24. 24. “ HIV differs” Differences between the U.S and Uganda No one will argue that having a flue in a country where you can have medicine and food would not result as in a country were most people can afford medicine and proper nutrition. It is the same with HIV or AIDS.
 25. 25. “ HIV differs” Differences between the U.S and Uganda It is the same with HIV or AIDS. The patient’s overall physical, emotional and nutritional state will affect the way the patient is developing HIV/AIDS as for all disease (cancer, flue,…). Because it will modify the way you are, your immune system, fighting the pathogen No one will argue that the consequences of having a flue in a country where you can have medicine and food are different than if you live in a country were most people can afford medicine and proper nutrition.
 26. 26. “ HIV differs” Differences between the U.S and Uganda No one will argue that having a flue in a country where you can have medicine and food would not result as in a country were most people can afford medicine and proper nutrition. It is the same with HIV or AIDS. So yes what you eat and what you do can make a difference As it does when you have a flue (eat oranges, have a lot of rest,…) BUT It won’t cure you!!! The patient’s overall physical, emotional and nutritional state will affect the way the patient is developing HIV/AIDS as for all disease (cancer, flue,…). Because it will modify the way you are, your immune system, fighting the pathogen
 27. 28. Questioning is good
 28. 29. Questioning is good Misleading questions and answers are wrong and dangerous
 29. 30. Questioning is good Misleading questions and answers are wrong and dangerous So be careful, get informed and make your own opinion!!
