  • Triggered proposal ArcFUEL Final Workshop “Forest Fires: Fuel mapping in the Mediterranean countries” 7
  • Ground-air resources manageme nt Dynamic fleet tracking Fuel Maps Fire Evolution & behavior Evacuation assistance to citizens Dynamic emergency monitoring Post-fire flood & erosion risk ArcFUEL Final Workshop “Forest Fires: Fuel mapping in the Mediterranean countries” 8
  • Past EU/FCM production 1990-2000: Reclassification of the vegetation types to produce Fuel Maps from Forest & National Maps based on assumptions 2000-2010: forest fuel catalogues are established: NFFL, Scott & Burgan, PROMETHEUS 2010+: JRC works (e.g. FUELMAP project) ArcFUEL Final Workshop “Forest Fires: Fuel mapping in the Mediterranean countries” 10
  • JRC/FCM production 2010+ FUELMAP developed 52 new Fuel Types Generic enough to represent forest vegetation complexes according to flammability, combustibility and fire-impact criteria. Limitation 250m X 250m FUELMAP focuses on Fuel Types and their structure and not on the production of Fuel Maps per se ArcFUEL Final Workshop “Forest Fires: Fuel mapping in the Mediterranean countries” 11
  • Fuel Mapping Problems Problem 1: Different mapping approaches Problem 2: Use of customized forest fuel models. Problem 3: Lack of a harmonized methodology Impact 1: The existing FCM are not intercomparable Impact 2: The mapping process cannot be extrapolated straightforward to other areas Impact 3: The maps produced can’t be updated easily ArcFUEL Final Workshop “Forest Fires: Fuel mapping in the Mediterranean countries” 12
  • ArcFUEL solutions Compiles information from past FCM efforts (JRC) Use of “readily available” spatial data sets Delivers a consistent and systematic ex novo methodology for large scale classification and mapping of forest fuels Produce of a harmonized procedure according to INSPIRE ArcFUEL Final Workshop “Forest Fires: Fuel mapping in the Mediterranean countries” 13
  • ArcFUEL solutions Support the operational use of fire simulation applications in context of forest fire management Application in Greece, Portugal (national scale) and in Italy and Spain (regional scale) Validation with extensive field work ArcFUEL Final Workshop “Forest Fires: Fuel mapping in the Mediterranean countries” 14
  • ArcFUEL Technology & Data Remote sensing (GRASS-GIS, Erdas Imagine) GIS (ArcGIS Desktop, QGIS) Data harmonization (GoPublisher) Landsat satellite images (30m) JRC’s and already available ancillary data FUELMAP results ArcFUEL Final Workshop “Forest Fires: Fuel mapping in the Mediterranean countries” 15
