  • 1. Netiquette From the words “net” and “etiquette,” get it?
  • 2.
    • It took 38 years for radio to gain 50 million listeners.
    • It took 13 years for television to gain 50 million viewers.
    • But it only took 4 years for the Internet to gain 50 million users.
    • For that reason, the Internet is no longer the wild frontier that it was in the 1990s.
  • 3.
    • You don’t need many rules if you are driving and nobody else is on the highway, but you do when the roads are crowded during rush hour.
    • Likewise, the more crowded the Internet gets, the more important are guidelines for good online behavior.
    • Here is what I have learned from my own experience. These rules apply to e-mail, bulletin boards/forums, and chat rooms.
  • 4. Don’t Spam This means no:
    • Unsolicited Commercial E-mail (UCE)
    • Off-Topic Messages on Bulletin Boards
    • Chain Letters
    • Forwarding of E-mail Hoaxes
  • 5. Use the subject line if you have one.
  • 6. DON'T USE ALL CAPS!
  • 7. Send & receive e-mail attachments with care.
    • Ask before sending really large attachments.
    • Consider using a zip/unzip program.
    • Watch out for viruses!
  • 8. Before taking part in a chat room or bulletin board discussion, learn the rules.
  • 9. No Trolls! This means no:
    • Abusive, insulting behavior
    • Impersonation of others
    • Revealing real-life info
    • Creating websites to bully classmates
    • Cyberstalking
  • 10. Quote only the part of a message you’re responding to.
  • 11. Keep those signature files short, too.
  • 12. Be nice to the newbies.
    • Remember when you were one?
  • 13. Don’t flirt in the chat rooms.
    • You may think you’re talking with this . . .
    • When you’re really talking with this!
  • 14. Don’t flood the chat rooms.

    • Online games
  • 17. Consider using a spellchecker.
  • 18. If all this is too much to remember, go by the golden rule.
