La Area Chamber Of Commerce Education And Workforce Development Committee.091709 - Presentation Transcript

  1. Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Education and Workforce Development Committee American Graduation Initiative and Obama-Biden Agenda for College Affordability September 17, 2009 Los Angeles, California. Panel Discussion conducted before the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Education and Workforce Committee delivered on its promise to relate the impact of the “American Graduation Initiative: Stronger American Skills through Community Colleges” to the State of California . Leaders from a cross-section of Government, Community Colleges and Warren T. Furutani (D-55) School Districts, conducted an exciting, motivating and awe-inspiring California State Assembly presentation that was refreshing, comprehensive and instructive. The Bad News: there is a “disconnect” between the K1-12, CSU and UC systems; there is a and a lack of accountability for student achievement within the systems individually; there has NEVER been enough money to support the Community College system, which “bridges the gap” between the student and the workforce; and the economy is squeezing out students. The Good News: Both freshmen Assembly Members are fully committed to making the California Community College system the best in the country, again; and are already taking steps to do so, politically (see links below). Antonio Portantino (D-44) California State Assembly The Best News: President Barack Obama’s Graduation Higher Education Committee Initiative and the Obama-Biden Agenda for College Affordability will help this nation once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020 (http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/Investing-in-Education- The-American-Graduation-Initiative/). Chamber Member Alero Mack, CEO of Alero Equities (http://www. aleroequities.com), and Founder of ABC Financial Literacy Project, is championing innovative ways to leverage legislative changes into workforce experience and income opportunities for community college interns that Eloy Ortiz Oakley benefit the entire community (http//www.abclearnmoney.org) Superintendent - President Long Beach City College He employs college interns to work with insurance professionals to educate teachers about recent changes that affect their retirement plans; organize free monthly financial literacy workshops for students; and promote an “adopt-a-school” program to benefit teachers, parents and students by involving nearby business owners and business associations to build, strengthen and sustain economic development activities among representatives from Los Angeles’ Sister Cities International “twins” and their “twins” worldwide. That increases local tax rolls by tapping into the digital global community and spreads financial literacy awareness. 2. A PROPOSED PARADIGM SHIFT INVOLVING THE LOS ANGELES AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL CHAMBERS Andrew Williams, Jr., Managing Director, ABC Financial Literacy Project (ABCFLP) proposes to develop, organize, coordinate, sustain and replicate an “Adopt-A-School” demonstration model throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District, Community Colleges and Universities, including K1-12, charter, and special needs schools, segmented by Neighborhood Council Districts. One objective is to get business owners in each District to make monthly appearances at schools in their "District" or community to talk with students about (1) how their particular business applies financial literacy to operate and manage their business and (2) what talents, skills and abilities decided them to choose their particular business, thereby becoming role models the kids can emulate. Our success can help Los Angeles communities derive benefit from a more active involvement with Sister Cities International (http://www.sister-cities.org/programs/youth.cfm) by treating this entire effort as a demonstration model to encourage the participation and support for multi-lingual and multi-cultural financial literacy projects and school presentations by surrounding business owners, parents and organizations representing each of the 25 Los Angeles Sister Cities International “twins” as well as smaller “ethnic” and “neighborhood” chambers of commerce and business associations, all of whom we are asking to join the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce in order to strengthen and sustain educational and economic development projects locally and internationally. Deliverables may include a "reality" iptv show channel or station, in the event ABCFLP can secure funding/in-kind contributions from vendors, personnel and supporters.
