    3. 3. STEVLAND HARDAWAY MORRIS AKASTEVIEWONDER By: Andrew Taylor
    4. 4. ABOUT STEVIE WONDER• STEVIE WONDER WAS BORN PREMATURE AND AS A RESULT, BLIND.• REGARDLESS OF THIS FACT HE HAS BEEN A SINGER, SONG WRIITER, INSTRUMENTALIST, PERFORMER AND A HUMANITARIAN.• HE WAS SIGNED BY MOTOWN RECORDS AT THE AGE OF 11, AND HAD HIS FIRST #1 HIT AT THE AGE OF THIRTEEN. HE STILL HOLDS THE RECORD OF BEING THE YOUNGEST PERSON TO HAVE REACHED THE #1 SPOT ON THE BILLBOARDS.• STEVIE WONDER EVOLVED FROM BEING A CHILD PRODIGY TO BEING A SOCIAL IDOL.• AT THE AGE OF 21 STEVIE WONDER LEFT MOTOWN AND PURSUED HIS OWN STYLE AND TYPE OF MUSIC, UTILIZING SYNTHESIZERS AND OTHER SOUNDS TO EVOLVE HIS OWN TYPE OF MUSIC.• IGNORING HIS DISABILITY AND PURSING HIS MUSIC HAS MADE HIM A MONUMENTAL FIGURE IN MODERN MUSIC.
    5. 5. ABOUT STEVIE WONDER CONT.• STEVIE WONDER IS A COMMITED HUMANITARIAN THAT HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH MANY ACTIVITIES AND CHARITIES, SUCH AS: • DR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.S NATIONAL HOLIDAY • FUNDRAISING FOR AIDS RESEARCH • CHILDREN‟S CHARITIES • CANCER CHARITIES • DISASTER RELIEF FUNDRAISING• WITHOUT QUESTION, STEVIE IS ONE OF THE MOST HONOURED ARTISTS OF OUR GENERATION.
    6. 6. STEVIE WONDER‟S EARLY CHILDHOOD• STEVIE WONDER WAS BORN STEVLAND HARDAWAY JUDKINS IN SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.• HE WAS BORN WITH THE CONDITION RETINOPATHY AS A RESULT OF BEING CONCIEVED 6 WEEKS PREMATURE.• HE WAS BORN WITH THE NAME STEVLAND HARDAWAY JUDKINS WHICH WAS LATER CHANGED TO STEVLAND HARDWAY MORRIS WHEN LULA MAE HARDAWAY (STEVIE‟S MOTHER) LEFT STEVIES FATHER.
    7. 7. STEVLAND HARDAWAY MORRIS • STEVLAND HARDAWAY MORRIS GREW UP PLAYING A PLETHORA OF INSTRUMENTS, LIKE THE PIANO, HARMONICA, DRUMS, AND BASS. • DUE TO STEVLAND‟S OVER PROTECTIVE MOTHER, STEVIE WONDER WAS NEVER ALLOWED TO PLAY OUTDOORS. • STEVIE WONDER WAS ALSO VERY INVOLVED WITH THE CHURCH BECAUSE OF HIS MUSICAL TALENTS. • AS A CHILD STEVIE WONDER NEVER LOOKED AT HIS DISABILITY AS A HANDICAP, BUT TOOK IT AS A CHALLENGE. • AT SCHOOL STEVIE WONDER WAS TOLD THAT HE WOULD NEVER MAKE IT. • AFTER THAT, STEVIE WONDER DECIDED THAT HE WAS DETERMINED TO PROVE THOSE PEOPLE WRONG.
    8. 8. AND HE DID PROVE THEM WRONG

WHAT IMPRESSED BERRY GORDY WAS STEVIE WONDERS ABILITY TO PLAY THE HARMONICA. • AT THE AGE OF 11, STEVLAND HARDAWAY MORRIS WAS SIGNED ONTO MOTOWN RECORDS UNDER THE STAGE NAME OF LITTLE STEVIE WONDER.
    10. 10. 11. 11. TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF CONT. • LITTLE STEVIE WONDER‟S ROYALTIES WERE KEPT IN A TRUST FOR HIM BY A STATE- APPOINTED GUARDIAN UNTIL HE REACHED THE AGE OF 21. • AT ONE POINT, LITTLE STEVIE WONDER WAS TOLD THAT HE ALREADY HAD THREE STRIKES AGAINST HIM BY HIS TEACHERS TELLING HIM THAT HE SHOULD STOP PURSUING MUSIC UNTIL HE WAS 19. • EVENTUALLY STEVIE WONDER AQUIRED A PRIVATE TEACHER THAT TRAVELED WITH HIM SO THAT HE COULD CONTINUE HIS EDUCATION.
    12. 12. DISCRIMINATION OF STEVIE WONDER• THE THREE STRIKES THAT STEVIE‟S TEACHERS SPOKE OF WERE: • BEING POOR • BEING BLACK • AND BEING BLINDTHE DISCRIMINATION THAT STEVIE WONDERENDURED WAS AMAZING. IN TODAY‟S WORLD,NO TEACHER WOULD EVER RISK TALKING TOONE OF THEIR STUDENTS LIKE STEVIEWONDER WAS. THROUGH STEVIE‟SDETERMINATION AND TALENTS, HE PROVEDHE COULD DO ANYTHING HE PUT HIS MIND TOREGARDLESS OF WHAT ANYONE ELSE TOLDHIM.

    14. 14. PURSUIT OF ARTISTIC FREEDOM • IN 1970 STEVIE WONDER LEFT MOTOWN AND RECORDED 2 INDEPENDENT ALBUMS BY HIMSELF. • BECAUSE OF THIS, BERRY GORDY AGREED TO GIVE STEVIE WONDER INDEPENDENCE OVER HIS WORK IF HE RETURNED TO MOTOWN RECORDS. • IN 1972 STEVIE WONDER RETURNED TO MOTOWN RECORDS WHERE HE SIGNED A $13 MILLION DOLLOR CONTRACT WITH MOTOWN RECORDS. • THROUGH THIS STEVIE WONDER WAS ENTITLED TO A HIGHER ROYALTY RATE AND FULL CREATIVE CONTROL OVER HIS MUSIC.
    15. 15. FREEDOM OF HIS MUSIC • AFTER STEVIE WONDERS RETURNED TO MOTOWN RECORDS, HE STARTED TO WRITE SONGS OVER CONTROVERSAL ISSUES. • STEVIE WONDER WROTE SONGS REGARDING ISSUES SUCH AS POVERTY, DRUGS, WAR AND POLITICS. • ONE OF STEVIES POLITICAL SONGS WAS: “YOU HAVEN‟T DONE NOTHING” WHICH WAS A POLITICAL STAB AT RICHARD NIXON. • ANOTHER SONG THAT BROUGHT UP CONTROVERSY WAS “LIVING FOR THE CITY” WHICH SPOKE ABOUT POVERTY AND WAS CREDITED TO AFRICAN AMERICANS.
