  • Hi. Geek R and D.For the last 5/6 years, I’ve been working in management
  • It’s hard to find a balance for my team between the work we have to deliver and exploring innovative new technologies and learning new things.
  • Overwhelming!See cool stuff like Carlos and Grant’s work and want to do the good stuff.Play and exploration.Get the impression that they don’t have to deliver too many banner campaigns.Previous job…
  • Learnt that even in restricitve, uncreative environments, you can create space to play
  • And we developed ways to explore the cutting edge whilst still delivering our work.R&D a culture, not a project
  • I like to do this by…Harnessing the obsessional drive that fulfilling my geek fantasies provides.I@m no stranger to this… Kinecthackery
  • And so when my boss gave me a copy of this book:
  • And told me to order a 3D printer….I knew immediately what I wanted to do.
  • I’m going to 3d print a model of myself in Carbonite.
  • Turns out it’s not that simple…We’ve got a lot to learn…
  • The spool that comes with the printer is rubbish and keeps sticking.Open source community had provided a printable replacement…Extend it
  • Air duct causing the prints to curl. Find and print another one
  • Complete strip down of the printerFaulty temp sensor
  • Already knew how to pull a mesh from a point cloud.Learn new techniques to make a mesh printableNot enough detail in the face.
  • Photogrammetry instead gave much more detail
  • Yet more software
  • Refining our skills
  • Experimenting with the printer settings to get an optimum print
  • So then, take part A, add to part B right?
  • Not quite…and this was just last week. :-/
  • BUT…Because I REALLY want to be Han Solo. And because we had to learn so much
  • We knew just what we had to do to fix it…And here it is!Just goes to show what you can learn by playing with toys….
  • Cheers!Jas, Ed, Chris and the two Sams.

  • Building a better mousetrap Skills learnt: Legitimate uses for a dremel Creative uses for masking tape The physics of plastic melting points Moving beyond boolean modelling
  • Did we just debug advanced electronics? Skills learnt: Advanced soldering skills Ground up understanding of how the machine works Using a voltmeter for fun and profit Dealing with american customer support
  • Using kinect to pull a point cloud Skills learnt: Building a mesh from point cloud, healing models, Skanect, blueprinting a human turntable.
  • Photogrammetry Skills learnt: 123D suite, mesh healing, NetFabb studio, what the hell a ‘normal’ is, how to photograph a subject with an even contrast
  • Finally, after nearly 3 months of pissing about…
  • Thank you (with grateful acknowledgement of my awesome team who I couldn’t have done it without) @andrewdotdobson
