This presentation is to inform you of a project our class is starting in a few weeks. Our project titled, “Silly Shapes” is all about learning shapes and how to recognize them in the world around us. Students will collaborate with one another while learning about shapes. Also while completing this unit, students will meet many standards as well as objectives for their kindergarten curriculum.
As the teacher, I will provide students with necessary class time to complete the project. I will also be leading each group and educating them on each shape. Over the next month, we will learn about each shape and how to determine the difference between them. I will also provide the students with materials needed to complete the project. I will monitor their progress while encouraging them to gain independence for their work.
Role of the Parent
Parents are asked to simply monitor the child’s progress. We will do all the “research” and group work in the classroom. Volunteers are welcomed to monitor students while in the room. Students may also ask questions regarding shapes and the number of sides and such. Please assist your child because we are researching by book, computer, and people.
Role of the Student
Student will be divided into groups where they will research different shapes (circle, square, rectangle, and triangle). Students are to learn the difference between the shapes and use materials around the room to create an example of each shape. Students will then give an oral presentation to the class explaining how their model represents the shapes discussed in class. Students must also explain the differences in the shape (number of sides, etc.). Students will be graded on how well they work together, their final product, and their understanding of the mathematical concept of shapes.

Students will meet many standards as well as objectives for their kindergarten curriculum.
It will provide students with an opportunity to build crucial 21 st century skills.
