  • 2. I AM UN•DOC•U•MENT•ED (ən-’dä-kyə-,men-təd)• I am not a citizen nor a legal permanent resident of the United States.• Came to the U.S. when I was 3 in 1994 on tourist visas• Kept this a secret until I was 19/20
  • 3. THE DREAM ACT• Federal DREAM Act • D.R.E.A.M. = Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors • Would provide a pathway to citizenship based on certain criteria (age, education, background, etc.)• Illinois DREAM Act • Passed in August 2011 • Not a pathway to citizenship, assists undocumented students in their education• “DACA” • D.A.C.A. = Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals • 2 year protection for undocumented immigrants under 31 who came before age 16
  • 4. DROP THE I-WORD PLEDGE
  • 5. JULIO SALGADO• Queer undocumented Mexican artist• Pieces work to empower the undocumented, queer, and “undocu-queer” communities• Projects address anti-immigrant discourse
  • 6. I Am Undocu-Queer! series
  • 7. JOSE ANTONIO VARGAS• Undocumented Filipino immigrant & Pulitzer Prize winning journalist• Came out in June 2011• Continues to advocate for immigrant rights • Founded the organization “Define American”
  • 8. IMMIGRANT YOUTH JUSTICE LEAGUE(IYJL)• Chicago based organization led by undocumented youth and their allies• Started centered around the pending deportation of a UIC student in 2010• Advocate for/support undocumented immigrants and their families• Started the “Coming Out of the Shadows” rally that has spread throughout the nation
  • 9. “CHICAGO 6”• Six IYJL members arrested in August 2011 protesting the Secure Communities Program
  • 10. INSIDE/OUT PROJECT
  • 11. FINAL PROJECT• An exploration of my journey of “coming out of the shadows”• Appropriating sound/video from fellow undocumented youth, will include photos that I have taken• May include a spoken word piece
