1.- WHY DO WE DO SPORTS? It’s fun. We feel better when we exercise, it’s healthy. We practice values: team work, discipline, self-control. We learn how to be a good competitor and how to cope when we lose. It helps us relieve stress and clear our minds

2.- WHAT SPORTS DO WE PRACTICE? Individual Sports: We play on our own or against another player. Examples: tennis, swimming, athletics, skating, golf, etc. Team sports: We play with one or more partners against an opposing team. Examples: football, rugby, waterpolo, basketball, etc.

3.- ORIGINS OF OLYMPIC GAMES The Greeks invented the Olympic Games in honour of Zeus, God of Gods. Greeks believed that sports were not only entertaining but kept the warriors fit. The first Olympic games consisted of five athletic competitions (pentathlon). It was such an important event that truce was guaranteed in case of a war between regions! The old Olympic Games ended in 395 ac. The modern ones started in 1896.

They take place every four years in different host countries, in the summer season. Last Olympic games (2008) took place in Beijing. Next ones will take place in London, in 2012. Madrid hopes to be elected to host the Olympic Games in 2016.
