Climate<br />Climate of Cuba is semitropical<br />trade winds and sea breezes make coastal areas more habitable than temperature alone<br />Cuba has a rainy season from May to October<br />Droughts are common<br />Cuba's eastern coast is often hit by hurricanes from August to October, resulting in great economic loss. <br />

Important regions<br />The Sierra Maestra is Cuba's largest mountain range<br />symbolic point of reference for the Cuban nation<br />area served as refuge and campground to Cuban rebels dating back to Hatuey (killed in 1511)<br />Many intense battles took place in and around the mountain range <br />

Development of country<br />The development of the country is horrible due to the hurricanes<br />This is a third world country not only due to communism but also because the hurricanes destroy everything in the towns<br />The mountains however how protected the people from many battles<br />
  5. 5. Ethnic<br />70% of Cubans are of Spanish descent<br />Black population is descended from the slaves and from migrants from neighboring states, in particular Jamaica.<br />Chinese and African slaves were taken to Cuba in the early 1900s <br />

Poverty in Cuba<br />Living standards in Cuba fell dramatically in the early 1990s after the collapse of the east European communist bloc, <br />50% of nation still lives off of the peso other half uses the American dollar<br />Communism puts a restriction on the amount of goods the people can buy at the market<br />Communism also limits the jobs and how much money the common house hold can make <br />
  7. 7. The Cuban People<br />Language spoken: Spanish<br />Most of their influences are from Spain and Africa<br />Dancing is a huge part of their culture<br />

Cuban Missile Crisis<br />confrontation among the Soviet Union, Cuba and the United States in October 1962, during the Cold War<br />unsuccessful operations by the U.S. to overthrow the Cuban regime<br />The compromise was a particularly sharp embarrassment for Khrushchev and the Soviet Union because the withdrawal of U.S. missiles from Italy and Turkey was not made public<br />

Bay of Pigs Invasion <br />The Bay of Pigs invasion was intended to provoke popularity for an uprising against Fidel Castro<br />Instead, it gave Castro a military victory and a permanent symbol of Cuban resistance to American aggression.<br />Planning for the invasion began in 1960, before diplomatic ties with Cuba had been broken<br />since the plan was to overthrow a government with which the United States was not at war.<br />
