  • 7. There are a total of 535 members of Congress. 435 from the House and 100 from the Senate. Congress is currently in the 111 th congressional session.
  • 8. Texas Congress Members <ul><li>We are in the 6 th district. </li></ul><ul><li>We have 32 total reps. for Texas. </li></ul><ul><li>We have one representative- Joe Barton. </li></ul><ul><li>Two senators- John Cornyn and Kay Hutchison. </li></ul>
  • 9. Kay Hutchison <ul><li>Previously Texas Treasurer. </li></ul><ul><li>Elected in 1993. Won the re-elections in both 2000 and 2006 and is up for another in 2012. </li></ul><ul><li>Is on her 3 rd term serving for the senate. </li></ul><ul><li>Home state: </li></ul>
  • 10. John Cornyn <ul><li>Previously a district judge, member of the supreme court, and an attorney general. </li></ul><ul><li>Elected in 2008 and is up for re-election in 2014. Has served two years; first elected in 2002. </li></ul><ul><li>Home state: </li></ul>
  • 11. President of the Senate <ul><li>The president of the senate is the vice president( Joe Biden). </li></ul><ul><li>Elected in 2009, this is his first year to be President of the Senate and is up for re-election in 2012. </li></ul><ul><li>Biden has spent more time in Congress than any other vice presidential candidate. </li></ul><ul><li>Was Senator of Delaware from 1973 until he resigned in 2009. </li></ul>Born in Pennsylvania, but moved to Delaware at ten.
  • 12. Robert Byrd <ul><li>Byrd is the President Pro Tempore. Elected in 2009, this is his third term and is up for re-election in. </li></ul><ul><li>Senator from West Virginia and former Senate Leader of the Democratic Party. </li></ul><ul><li>Currently the oldest member of the U.S. Congress </li></ul>Born in North Carolina, but raised in West Virginia.
  • 13. Harry Reid <ul><li>Assumed Majority Leader office from 2005 to present. Two year terms and is up for re-election in 2011. </li></ul><ul><li>Was a member of the Nevada State Assembly and Lieutenant governor in 1970. </li></ul>From Nevada.
  • 14. Mitch McConnell <ul><li>Re-elected this year as Minority Leader and is up for re-election in 2011. The term is two years. His second term as Minority Leader. </li></ul><ul><li>Previously an attorney and a congressional aid. </li></ul><ul><li>Was first elected to the senate in 1984. </li></ul>From Kentucky.
  • 15. Richard Durbin <ul><li>Re-elected as Assistant Majority Leader in 2009. This is his third term, and is up for another re-election in 2011. The term is two years. </li></ul><ul><li>Previously member of the US House, and was an attorney. </li></ul>Home State: Illinois
  • 16. Jon Kyl <ul><li>Re-elected in 2009, and up for another re-election in 2011, this is Kyl’s second term as Assistant Minority Leader. </li></ul><ul><li>Before his public service he practiced law, and was previously an attorney. </li></ul>
