EVAULATION Q3
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
FILM INSTITUTIONS – Throughout my research I created a post about film institutions and below I have
screenshotted the mind map I produced on ExamTime. This information is vital and will help me answer and development this
question.
FILM INSTUTIONS
Within the post ‘Film Institutions’ that I created throughout my research, I had analysed four film institution companies including
information on their parent ownership, when the film institution was established and famous films the company had produced or
distributed. This helped me gain an understanding of what different elements that these institutions were apart of and that they are all
well known for creating certain genre films.
When researching into the big 6 institutions, out of the four I had analysed, I found that Warner Bros was the only film institution out of
the four that numerous experience with distributing Sci-Fi Thriller films. To make the decision as a group of who would be most
appropriate in distributing our own opening title sequence, we had to look at more Hollywood and independent distributors as I had
only looked at the four Hollywood institutions.
CONVERGENCE
Convergence in technology is technology that allows an audience to consume more
than one type of media from a single platform. Lots of aspects of the internet e.g.
social networking, YouTube, online editions of newspapers and magazines are
convergent. Their answer needs to be linked into the media area they are talking
about (Film, Music, Magazines, Newspapers, Radio, Video Games).
Digital projection is convergent technology because films that are produced digitally
have moved away from the physical film medium and can be supplied to theatres in
digital format. As the film is in digital format there are also cost savings as
potentially less work needs to be done on the film to get it onto Blu-Ray, DVD,
internet trailers etc. As no physical conversion needs to take place because the film
is already in digital format. Cross Media Convergence is really a Business Studies
term and refers to companies coming together vertically or horizontally.
SYNERGY
Synergy means working together to achieve an objective that couldn't be
achieved independently. Cross-media convergence can help with synergy if
companies are wise enough to take advantage of the links they have forged.
Disney is an obvious example of a synergistic company from the top down
from Film Studio to Kid's TV Channel to the Disney Store where children will
pester parents to buy all the merchandise and DVD/CD's from their favourite
films and TV shows.
So in summary, synergy is where two or more compatible products help to sell
each other and can include a film selling a computer game or vice versa or a
film selling a soundtrack. Examples include the James Bond film, Skyfall and
Adele's soundtrack.
HOLLYWOOD DISTRUBUTION
When researching I began to look further into the
'Big Six' distribution companies to find which of
them produced the most Thriller movies. As I had
previously mentioned that our OTS was linked in
with sci-fi and a superhero character, Warner Bros
was an appropriate distributor. However with the
genre of thriller as a whole, I found that Universal
Studios from the Big Six had distributed some of
the most famous thriller films, such as Jurassic
Park, Jaws and The Borne Identity. It was evident
that these films were targeted at teenagers and
some rated a 12, which is the same to our OTS.
Most of these movies have well known actors and
directors making them have large budgets, however
we are looking at a low budget film to distribute our
opening title sequence.
INDEPENDENT DISTRUBTION
I also looked into the distribution of Independent films, which are mostly low budget films with British Actors and
British companies. I researched into British independent film distributors and I found that the most common film
distribution was Film4, which create low budget films that distribute all kinds of different genre films. Film4 is also
owned by the network Channel 4.
In relation to this, BBC Films, is another British independent film distributor that is owned by the parent company The
BBC. On scale to Film4 they haven’t produced as many films but are defiantly well recognised in the British
independent institutions.
PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION
For our own opening title sequence we felt it was best if we created our own
production company, KLS Picture-House Productions, we choose a template
similar to Universals as it represents the global diverse of its company. ‘HAGE
Studios’ is our distributor company, HAGE is a acronym which we created
representing the first initials of all of our names in our media group (Heidi, Amy,
Gemma and Erin). We choose this specific template of iMovie because it's a
mountain peak, to represent our distribution company as a global film distributor
targeting no specific audience or country and implying it's varied mass audience.
If we had to choose out of the Big Six I feel that universal would be the best
suited distribution company which would distribute our media product due to the
fact they distribute a wide range of film genres. Our film's target audience appeals
to both Male and Female making it a suitable film for Universal to relate to our
media product.
