    6. What is the difference?
      • Academic Service-Learning
      • Community Service
      • Includes five components that may or may not be present in community service.
        • The service satisfies an academic course objective designed by the instructor
        • The service satisfies a need identified by the service recipient
        • Ongoing, structured reflection
        • Assessment and evaluation of the service activity
        • The activity benefits both the giver and receiver of the service
      • Can be part of an ongoing effort or a one-time volunteering effort.
      • Both community service and service-learning offer valuable experiences for all parties involved and are great opportunities to benefit the community.
    7. What is Service-Learning…really?
      • Picking up trash on a river bank?
      • Studying water samples using a microscope?
      • OR
      • When students collect and analyze water samples,
      • document their findings and present to a local
      • pollution control agency. That is service-learning.
    8. Does one “correct” definition of service-learning exist?
      • Maybe
      • Yes
      • No
      • Why?
      • According to www.servicelearning.org , “ Service-learning combines service objectives with learning objectives with the intent that the activity change both the recipient and the provider of the service. This is accomplished by combining service tasks with structured opportunities that link the task to self-reflection, self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content.”
