Children’s book research
Within this document I will talk about two different children’s books I
have researched in to.
Most of these books I have looked up have been on Amazon as in the
description it states what size the bookis, who wrote the bookand who
designed the pictures within them
The first book I researched in to was The very hungry caterpillaras this is
a favourite of mine from when i was little. It has been re-created many
times, some have different styled caterpillars orslightlydifferent pictures,
and a few have been made with finger puppets.Eric Carle is the authorof
this bookand it has been made in board bookformat. It is a very popular
bookdue to its vivid and colourful illustrations and howsimple and
hopeful the story is. This bookhas 26 pages which is usuallya lot for a
children’s bookbut this has a lot of detail widelyspread throughout the
story therefore needingquite a lot of pages. The language is in English
and as this is a very internationalspoken language, manypeople can read
this.Within the bookthere are many describingwords to show what the
caterpillareats within the week before he turns in to a butterflyat the
end. Every day further in to the week the caterpillareats more and more
therefore more detail is beingput in to the story and many colourful
pictures go alongwith this i.e. green apples, pinkice cream, chocolate
cake etc. The sentences are very spaced out, clear to read and bold, this
includes the title on the front page so children are able to read this
themselves.I’d say the target audience ofthis book is around 4 year olds
and plus. It’s about learningcolours, foods, describingwords and that the
caterpillarturns in to a butterflyat the end.
The second bookI looked up was The boy who cried wolf. This is about a
boy/shepherd who is a mischievous youngboy who is bored one day and
decides to cry wolf to all the villagers to playa trick on them. Little does
he know that the third time he cries wolf there really is one there and the
villagers don’t believehim. This bookis written by Tony Ross. This title
provides clear and compellingtext accompanied byvibrant original
illustrations byTonyhimself. This bookis aimed at young children but
those who alreadyknow how to read e.g. 7 years plus,as this bookis
short, the illustrationsare simple and funny, the wolf is in human form it
suits young children quite well. This bookhas been re-created many times
there are slightlydifferent versions to it, some can be shorter or longer
than others, there are manydifferent endings to this story (including, the
boy gets eaten by the wolf, the sheep get eaten by the wolf, the sheep
and boy get chased away by the wolf etc) and the illustrations are
different in every one. This particularbookI havelooked at is quite short
with 28 pages compared to al lot of others that can have45 plus. The text
within the book is very spaced out and again bold and clear to read so
children can read this themselves.
Doing this research I found that most children’s books are very colourful
and have illustrations that are vibrant and funny, meaningthe animal can
be in human form and children like this sort of thing.
The text within the bookhas to be bold, big, well spaced out and clear to
read otherwise children maystruggle if the words are too close together,
especiallyif they are recentlylearningto read properly.
